The phrase “he came, he saw, and he conquered” fits really well with Joe Flacco. His rise has been so meteoric that it has brought back the famous half a decade old quotes by the ex-President, Donald Trump, on the veteran QB.

A year ago, while his second stint with the New York Jets came to an end, he was benched for Zach Wilson. Many thought they had seen the back of the 38-year-old. They guessed wrong. The City of Cleveland dialed Flacco’s number, and within days he went from watching football on his sofa to wearing Browns colors.

Since joining the Cleveland Browns in November, Joe Flacco has thrown for over 250 yards and two touchdowns in each of his five starts, surpassing 300 yards in his last four games. Under his leadership, the Browns reached the promised lands of the playoffs for the first time since 2021 and only the third time since 1999.

Yet there has always been a question in the minds of many: is Flacco really elite? There’s one stat every fan will point to. Despite a 16-year career in which he won the Lombardi Trophy (2012 with the Baltimore Ravens), he never played in a Pro Bowl. So where does he rank among some of the best in the history of football? The former US president has that answer covered.

Back in 2015, Donald Trump answered a series of questions in an exclusive interview. He put the ‘whether Joe Flacco is elite’ debate to bed by saying,

I think Joe Flacco is, actually, a very elite quarterback. He won a Super Bowl; he did it really, to a certain extent, with that great arm of his. I would say absolutely. He is an elite quarterback.

The meteoric rise of Joe Flacco in Cleveland

When the 2023 season began, the Browns were predicted to have an outside shout for a place in the playoffs. The season started brightly, beating teams like the San Francisco 49ers, the Tennessee Titans, and the Indianapolis Colts. But as they were heating up, tragedy struck.

Starting quarterback Deshaun Watson ended his campaign with a season-ending injury. One by one, the QB room emptied as both backups, PJ Walker and Dorian Thompson Robinson, followed Watson to the hospital bed.

The Browns general manager, Andrew Berry, interviewed several free agents. Eventually, Berry settled on Joe Flacco. And what a bullseye it was! Flacco not only steadied the ship, but did way more than he was asked to.

A recent poll suggested he is currently the second favorite to win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year, only trailing Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin. Not only that, if the Browns keep winning and a few results around the league go in their favor, then they might even snatch the AFC #1 spot from under the Ravens’ nose.
