Drew Lock further asserted the idea that the 2023 NFL season is the year of the backups by beating the 10-4 Philadelphia Eagles. What’s even more remarkable is that Lock wasn’t even sure whether he would start the Monday night game at Lumen Field.
The Seattle Seahawks were trying their level best to get veteran starter Geno Smith ready for the Eagles game. Head coach Pete Caroll said before the game that they would be using the last hour to get a final assessment. Eventually, Smith did not make it, and Lock started his second game of the season.
The 27-year-old, after completing a couple of bangers to wide receiver DK Metcalf, used his final drive of the game to perfection. With just under a minute left in the game as the Eagles were leading 17-13, Lock took the snap and found Jaxson Smith-Nijgba close to the Eagles’ endzone. The rookie wide receiver, while under pressure from the Philadelphia corner, leaped forward to grab the ball, securing the game-winning touchdown.
It was Lock’s fourth game-winning drive, but his first since Week 8 against the Los Angeles Chargers. He was still part of the Denver Broncos setup back then. After handing the Eagles their third straight defeat, he turned to the camera and shouted,
PUT THAT F**KING S**T ON MOTHER****R.
It was an emotional victory for Drew Lock
The Denver Broncos drafted Drew Lock in the 2019 second round. He played five games in his rookie season, winning four, and started 13 the following season, losing nine. After six more games in 2021, they traded the former Missouri player to the Seattle Seahawks. But he lost out to Geno Smith for the starting quarterback role and did not play a single game in 2022.

He finally got the chance to prove himself, and he is 2-2 for the season. Yet there’s no guarantee he will get another chance if Coach Caroll decides to go back to Smith. But during the game, the 33-year-old was rooting for his young backup.
As the game wrapped up, Lock described how he was feeling about securing the win after not playing for such a long time. He told the on-field reporter,
Yeah! it's hard. It's so hard to describe the feeling. You know not playing the game for so long, or at least it feels like a very long time to me. You sit there and watch games and wonder, Can I do this still? I haven't been out there on the field. That's the human nature of it.
Drew Lock finished the Eagles game with 22 of 33 for 208 yards and a touchdown in the win. It kept the Seahawks (7-7) playoff dreams alive for the moment. Next, they will travel to the music city and play the already-eliminated Tennessee Titans.
