In every sport, defeats are very difficult to digest. The stakes are exceedingly high in professional sports, and players do their best to come out on top of their opponents. The Philadelphia Eagles learnt this the hard way last season, as they came up short against the Kansas City Chiefs after a gruelling contest in the Super Bowl LVII.
The Eagles lost out by a slender margin of 38-35, failing to cap off what had been a brilliant season for them up until then. During the regular season, the Eagles boasted of having the best defense in the league but failed to contain the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in the Super Bowl LVII who ended up making all the difference in the titular clash.
Eagles defensive end, Brandon Graham, however, has come up with a logical explanation for their inefficient defense on the night, blaming it on the condition of the pitch at the State Farm Stadium in Arizona. The 35-year-old veteran felt that the Chiefs’ offense got extremely lucky, as the Eagles defenders continuously slipped on the damp outfield. This had a huge impact on the game, as the Eagles defense failed to record a single sack.
Brandon Graham blamed State Farm Stadium’s slippery pitch as one of the reasons for Eagles’ Super Bowl LVII defeat
“You need that traction to be able to get off the block and we were slipping a lot,” Graham said in a recent interview on Sports Take with Derrick Gunn & Rob Ellis. “I don’t make excuses. I just know that that’s what was being talked about, us trying to get out of our own head a little bit, too… I’m telling you that O-line, they got blessed, I’ll say that.”
In particular, the defender identified one particular play involving in the first quarter Josh Sweat, where the defensive end slipped while attempting a sack on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and the throw made its way onto Travis Kelce.
“When we looked at the film, man, it was a couple of times where it was if Sweaty don’t slip, boy, strip sack,” Graham said. “Oh my God, especially that first drive when he threw it across the middle to (tight end Travis) Kelce. He was right there. He slipped. We could not believe it.”
The Farm State Stadium received a lot of flak after the game. Players from both sides slipped on numerous occasions, but in the end, truth be told, the Chiefs players dealt with conditions better and ran out deserving winners.
