Eagles HC Nick Sirianni breaks silence on demoting DC Sean Desai for assistant Matt Patricia despite good record

The head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Nick Sirianni, made a brave decision to promote Matt Patricia as the defensive coordinator in the place of Sean Desai. The latter was the DC earlier and under his leadership, the team’s defense performed well throughout the season.

However, the last few games were exceptions. The Eagles lost all their last three and, as a result, the HC had to take a brave decision.

After the crazy game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, which the Eagles lost 17-20, the HC had to address the growing defensive concerns. And the demotion of Desai was an immediate step to address that. The Eagles’ defense gave away more than 90 points in the last three games and it became a major problem for the management.

I made the decision -- I did what I thought I needed to do in the best interest of the football team. We made some adjustments there. I didn’t feel like we were playing and coaching well enough on defense, so I made an adjustment. It was my decision and that’s what I did.
Sirianni said while addressing the change

The game against the Seahawks was an astonishing one for most of the NFL crowd. The Eagles team took hefty leads in all three quarters, however, choked at the last moment, i.e. the fourth quarter.

Till the end of the third quarter, the Eagles were leading by 17-10, but in the last quarter, they gave away ten points without garnering a single one. With this, the team suffered their third consecutive defeat.

Patricia will take all the major defensive decisions from now on for the Eagles

With the major reshuffle, Patricia will now be in charge of making all the major defensive decisions. He will be leading the defense from now on. Nick Sirianni gave a confirmation to it.

All the final decisions are made by Matt right now --As disappointed as Sean was, I think he handled himself like a true pro. Sean is still helpful to this football team because he has a bright mind and he can help and as I listened in on defense today they were communicating back and forth very similar to the way they communicated with the roles reversed.

The Philadelphia Eagles now hold a 10-4 record, the same with the Dallas Cowboys. Both will now fight to earn the top spot in the NFC East Division. The San Francisco 49ers are the No.1 team in the NFC presently.
