Bill Belichick has been one of the best coaches in the NFL for over 20 years. It’s no surprise that when you put together the greatest active coach list, the 71-year-old will be part of it. Unless you are Emmanuel Acho who believes the New England Patriots head coach should not be part of it, let alone make it in the top 3.

FOX Sports Speak’s host, while reacting to a list compiled by PFF, dismissed the inclusion of Belichick. He claims that, at present, there are better coaches in the NFL than the eight-time (six as the Pats HC and two in supportive coach roles) Super Bowl winner. “I respect PFF,” said Acho, “but I do not respect this list.” He objected to seeing Belichick placed in the second spot.

Even Acho’s co-host, LeSean McCoy, had the same opinion. “Belichick definitely shouldn’t be on the list,” said McCoy as he revised his decision to keep the Patriots coach at nine or ten.

Not only that, Acho wasn’t too happy with some of the other inclusions as well. He had an issue with Sean McVay only making it as far as sixth on the list. Acho believes that the Super Bowl LVI winner with the Los Angeles Rams should be at least in the top 5.

Moreover, he expressed shock when he did not see Mike McCarthy on the list. The Dallas Cowboys coach missed out as Brian Daboll sneaked in. PFF made the argument that the New York Giants head coach had a good first season with massive improvements in the offense. This is debatable, as McCarthy led the Cowboys to the Playoffs back-to-back with a 12-5 record. Even before that, his time with the Green Bay Packers should matter because they won a Super Bowl.

Bill Belichick can still replicate his achievements with Mac Jones

All the cast members, including Joy Taylor, questioned the method PFF used to create the list. While they are spot on about some of the inclusions, what they are wrong about is their unanimous agreement on dropping Bill Belichick in a few places. Both Acho and McCoy placed Belichick “in the bottom 10, from 20 to 32.” The Patriots are currently in their rebuilding phase after Tom Brady‘s departure.

In 2000, when Belichick took charge of the team for the second time, many had low expectations. He recently had a rookie quarterback on the squad who was merely a sixth-round, 199th pick. But Belichick turned that rookie into arguably the best in NFL history. The Brady-Belichick partnership won numerous accolades together.

Now in 2023, he again has a rookie, Mac Joneswho had a good college career and a decent two seasons as a Patriots player. In 31 matches, Jones accumulated 6798 passing yards with 36 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. Belichick knows how to develop players, especially quarterbacks. The Patriots already have a good defense, and it will be their core going into the 2023 season.
