After back-to-back 12 wins record seasons, for the first time since the 1990s triumph, the Dallas Cowboys entered this season with high expectations. But the vision started blurring when the team suffered a tragic 42-10 defeat against the San Francisco 49ers, last weekend.
The Cowboys were totally outmatched by the 49ers offense and its quarterback Dak Prescott had one of the worst games of his career. He barely made 14 passes and recorded a massive three interceptions, against the backdrop of making promise of not crossing the double digits in that department this season.
While many blamed Prescott for the failure of the Cowboys, the player-turned-analyst and co-host of Speak show, Emmanuel Acho thinks otherwise. In his opinion, the bigger issue for the Cowboys’ offense is their coach Mike McCarthy, and not Prescott.
Acho defended the quarterback by saying, “I want to put it on Mike because the Cowboys looked better when Kellen Moore was at the helm. Same Dak Prescott stone for 7-37 touchdowns in a season, but the same Dak Prescott showed for what I believe 4,800 – 4,900 yards in a season. The same Dak Prescott had a top 10 red zone offense in just a year with a less talented offense.“
“So if I am thinking about why the Cowboys drop off offensively, I’m putting it on Mike,” he further added. Acho emphasized the point that McCarthy needs to be more mindful while scheming up, as he did in KaVontae Turpin‘s play.
Why did Mike McCarthy let go of Kellen Moore?
Coach Mike McCarthy joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 when Kellen Moore was offensive coordinator and play caller. Mike did not want to stunt Moore’s career growth, as he has been with the Cowboys for a long time. He started as a backup quarterback, quarterback coach, and then offensive coordinator.
However, with time, Coach McCarthy decided to part ways with Moore as offensive coordinator. According to the team’s executive vice president Stephen Jones, Mike wanted Moore to roll but he didn’t completely agree with his philosophies. McCarthy hinted that Moore’s ought to lighten up the scoreboard has affected the team’s overall performance. The coach wanted his team to score fewer points in the offenses, in order to, be ranked the No. 1 team in the league.
It eventually became so big that the team had to take the next step, of releasing Moore, after four seasons, including leading the NFL in total offense and scoring offenses, a couple of years back. Currently, Moore is working for the Los Angeles Chargers. While Brian Schottenheimer has been made the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys, after serving the team as a consultant.
