The Kansas City Chiefs have not been their usual self since offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy switched homes from Missouri to DC. Since his departure, the Super Bowl winners can’t seem to keep together and carve important victories like they used to.

A 9-6 record is a reflection of that topsy-turvy season. The Chiefs have already lost more games than they did in 2022. Under Bieniemy’s play, the Kansas City franchise were toppers in almost every category, but without him, they sit in the 9th spot in overall offense, as per FOX Sports.

To put this into context, the’ Patrick Mahomes‘-led Chiefs have scored fewer touchdowns (37) than the 15th-place Indianapolis Colts (39) and 17th-place Green Bay Packers (38). The interesting part is that Bieniemy’s current employers, the Washington Commanders (4-11), have the same number of TDs as the Chiefs (37).

Even though it’s no longer possible for the AFC West table toppers to bag the #1 seed in the conference, they will be playing postseason football and may even win the division. But to do that, they have to bounce back from their shock Christmas Day defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders and win the remaining games against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Chargers.

If the Chiefs manage to overcome those challenges, then NBC Sports Mike Florio argues that it won’t be stupendous to assume they approach Bieniemy. Considering the Commanders have nothing to play for after January 7, and on top of that, head coach Ron Rivera may be fired, returning to coach another Super Bowl team will entice the year-old.

The Kansas City Chiefs players are missing Eric Bieniemy

The quarterback’s coach, Matt Nagy, took over charge after Bieniemy left. It wasn’t Nagy’s first rodeo. He served as the Chiefs offensive coordinator back in the 2016–17 season.

So it was nothing new for him to step into. However, his second shot at the job has been below expectations after the standards his predecessor set for him to continue.

Even though Mahomes said back in March that “it has been a smooth transition,” the results show anything but. On top of that, the Chiefs are the sixth-worst team when turning over the ball (26) this season. To make matters worse. most of them are offensive giveaways.

This has changed the tone of the MVP QB, who recently came out and praised Bieniemy.

I think Coach Eric Bieniemy set that standard when he was here. And I think you could see those lingering effects of the other coaches who have coached underneath him.

The implications are that the Chiefs players are a little frustrated with the way they are losing winnable games. If they fail the last two games and either of their division rivals, the Raiders or the Denver Broncos, win their remaining games, then they might go above them in head-to-head record.
