A decade ago, the world watched as barely six-foot-tall men in red shirts took center stage at college football for Texas A&M. A knack for drama and a zeal to win made him stand out from the rest of the crowd. He was Johnny Manziel. However, somewhere down the line, “Johnny Football” wanted to end everything, even his own life.
According to Manziel, he was intentionally trying to hurt himself through excessive partying and spending all the cash he earned from playing football as an excuse to kill himself. It’s quite the revelation from a player who was always headstrong and a blunt truth-teller. Then again, he is also a flawed human being with unchecked emotions that spill out from time to time in front of the public eye. The former Cleveland Browns signal-caller recently admitted to sabotaging his life on purpose in the recent addition of the Netflix documentary ‘Untold.’
“I got diagnosed as bipolar,” Manziel said in the 111-minute-long episode. “It was the same as being called an alcoholic or a drug addict. I was just running from problems. [But] I planned to do everything that I wanted. Spend as much money as possible and then take my life.”
The Heisman Trophy (2012) winner did know how to party hard. In June 2014, Manziel was snapped riding a giant inflatable swan while holding a bottle of champagne. A couple of weeks later, he told the reporters at the NFL Rookie Symposium that he would not change for anyone. Moreover, on the field, he got fined for showing the middle finger to a Wahington player.

Johnny Manziel, a gun, and a Netflix documentary
“I don’t know what happened, but the gun just clicked on me,” Manziel tried to recall. It’s not clear what the 30-year-old is trying to imply specifically here. He may have tried to use a gun to shoot himself.
“I couldn’t fix what I had done,” he continued. “I didn’t have much of a relationship with my family. The ride was over.” He got married to model-turned-real-estate agent Bre Tiesi in 2018 in a private ceremony. Just a year later, he made his bipolar disorder public. While there was no report of a marital spat, Tiesi sparked split rumors after removing Manziel from her social media account. In 2021, the pair announced their divorce.
Furthermore, Johnny Manziel is currently employed by Fan-Controlled Football (an indoor American Football league) side Zappers. A tale of what could have been for the “Johnny Football.”
