“Can’t look too far down the road”: Ezekiel Elliott not worried about uncertain future as a Dallas Cowboy

In a not too distant past Ezekiel Elliott was one of the best running backs in the league and Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones decided to pay Elliott based on it. Now it’s been 3 years since Elliott and the Cowboys came to an agreement for a $90 million, 6 year extension signed in September 2019 and Elliott is now a shadow of his once 3 time Pro Bowler self.
Whether Elliott whose current contract has been widely called one of the worst contracts in recent NFL history, will stay a Cowboy after this current NFL season, as 2022 is the last season with guaranteed money. After this season it would be a lot easier for the Cowboys to move on from Elliott.

‘I’ll focus on every day”: Ezekiel Elliott

Elliott is himself is not worried about the possibility as he said in a recent interview to ESPN’s Todd Archer -“I think it is a big season, but I think you can’t look too far down the road,” Elliott said. “I think if I focus on every day, if I focus on having a good day of camp, if I focus on taking it week by week, I think everything will handle itself. And I don’t think there’s really a reason to look that far down the road. I think if I handle my business every day, then I’ll be in a pretty good situation at the end of the season.”
Running back contracted have become a necesary evil in the NFL as teams don’t want to lose the offensive production an elite running back offers but the wear and tear a running back suffers makes it difficult for a team to get the same production they were promised throughout a contract.
Notable example being Todd Gurley whose 4 year $60 million dollars were a tough pill to swallow for the LA Rams. The Cowboys are not without options as Tony Pollard, Zeke’s teammate on the Cowboy’s has had decent production. Elliott certainty hopes that this will be the season in which he will prove himself again to be an elite running back and possibly stay a part of America’s Team.
