Just a year after leaving the Dallas Cowboys, Ezekiel Elliott could be heading back to Arlington. A recent report from Jeremy Fowler suggested that both Elliott and the Cowboys have mutual interests in a reunion.

The Cowboys are in a bind about the running back spot. Although they re-signed Rico Dowdle to a one-year deal and have Deuce Vaughn and Hunter Lupeke in their arsenal, none of them seem to be in favor of being the starters for the Cowboys.

Even though Jerry Jones said the Cowboys were ‘all in’ for the free agency, they let Derrick Henry slip out of their hands even after he was waiting for Jones to dial him. Moreover, they approached former Indianapolis Colts RB Zack Moss, who reportedly turned down their offer because it wasn’t meeting his demands.

However, on Saturday, ESPN‘s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Cowboys may bring back former running back Ezekiel Elliot to Dallas. Fowler claimed both parties have mutual interests for this deal to go through. Naturally, after a pretty dry start to early free agency, Cowboys fans on social media were pumped to hear the team making some movement.

After waiting until August last year, the 28-year-old signed a one-year contract with the New England Patriots. He was poised to play in conjunction with Rhamondre Stevenson, but after suffering an ankle injury, the primary workload was shifted to Ezekiel Elliott‘s shoulders. In the end, he only managed 642 yards from 184 carries and 3 touchdowns. He added a team-high 51 receptions for 313 yards and two touchdowns.

Should the Cowboys sign Ezekiel Elliot?

Although Tony Pollard, who replaced Elliott last season, wanted to stay in Dallas, he was released earlier this month. Pollard signed a three-year deal with the Tennessee Titans, which means the three-time Pro Bowler can easily come in and become the starting running back.

It would be interesting to see what Jerry Jones’ reaction will be in the coming days because the veteran owner had previously stated that he did not regret Elliott’s departure.

What I can do for our fans is learn from what we did with Zeke. I can look back and make that comparison. And I'm more likely to learn from that than from some new faces, I really am. I believe that, as long as I do my homework and get my energy.
Jerry Jones said.

In the 2019 season, the Dallas Cowboys picked up Elliott’s fifth-year option after the Ohio State graduate didn’t show up at training. He eventually signed an extension worth $90 million, with $50 million guaranteed. That year, he notched 1357 yards for 12 touchdowns on 301 carries.
