Former Philadelphia Eagles captain Chris Maragos is set to receive $43.5 million after winning lawsuit against doctors who have been found guilty of ‘medical negligence’. Maragos has featured for the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks as well.

Chris Maragos last made an appearance in week 6 back in 2017 for the Philadelphia Eagles before being sidelined with a knee injury. At first it was said that Maragos was diagnosed with a torn posterior cruciate ligament and hence underwent surgery. However the medical team turned a blind eye to a meniscus tear which became critical.

As a result Chris Maragos wasn’t able to play again and officially retired from the NFL in 2019. The court has ordered orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Bradley to pay $29.2 million and the Rothman Orthopaedics Institute to pay $14.3 million.

Chris Maragos commented that instead of having to watch the Super Bowl LVII as a spectator he could very well have been a part of the team. Although he will have to live with the constant pain of not being able to play anymore, he hopes that his case acts as an example for others.

On Sunday, my team played in the Super Bowl, and I could only watch and wonder whether I could have been out there with them had I received proper medical care,” Maragos said. “While I live in constant pain and will never get back on the field, I hope this decision sends a message to teams’ medical staffs that players are people, not just contracts.”

Chris Maragos’s attorney Dion G. Rassias, said- “this case and this jury may have changed the course of history by now forcing these team doctors and trainers to stop worrying about when a player might return to play and start thinking about the next 50 years of a player’s life.”

The court deliberated over the matter for a little under 3 hours before finding the doctors guilty. The court declared that the medical stuff had ignored the meniscus which resulted in a career ending injury.
