Defensive back Fred Smoot, who had a successful 9-year-long career in the NFL with two different teams, is now working with the broadcasting team of the Washington Commanders. However, the 45-year-old former DB is facing legal trouble that could tarnish his career as a sports broadcaster.
According to multiple reports, Fred Smoot was arrested on Thursday morning in Virginia on a civil misdemeanor charge of “failure to comply with a support obligation.” He turned himself into the Cops at Loudoun County and was taken into custody at the adult detention center at 10:58 AM. The Sheriff’s office revealed that he was arrested on a civil issue.
Smoot allegedly failed to “provide support” in a civil issue, as he was asked to do a couple of years ago in regard to a minor traffic rule violation. The former Washington defensive back allegedly had a misdemeanor for driving without a license and for having expired tags. ESPN reported that Smoot was unaware of pending arrest warrants as they had been sent to an old address of the former NFL DB, where he doesn’t reside anymore. Nonetheless, after spending a day in detention he was released on Friday.
Smoot is not new to facing legal trouble. During his playing days, he and some of the former Minnesota Vikings players got into trouble for hiring pr*st*tutes for a s*x party on a boat. The infamous incident known as “Love Boat” scandal, which happened back in 2005, shocked the NFL world. In this incident, Smoot ended up pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges.
Additionally, in 2013, Smoot received a six-month probation for driving under the influence. Approximately, one year later, he was charged with domestic violence but was later found not guilty by a judge. Smoot has also been cited for traffic violations several different times.

Fred Smoot had a successful 9-year-long career in the NFL

The talented defensive back Fred Smoot was drafted by the Commanders in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He immediately became a starter in the league as he started 13 games in his rookie campaign and registered 5 interceptions.
He had an impressive run in Washington as he registered 16 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles during his 4-year tenure with the Redskins (now known as the Commanders).
As a result, Smoot signed a huge 6-year deal with the Vikings worth up to $34 million. However, he only played two years in Minnesota and was released by the franchise in 2007.
Just two days later, he signed a new 5-year deal with the Redskins worth up to $25 million but he couldn’t sustain there either. He only completed three years of his contract before getting released by them in 2010. That was the last time he played in the league.
