The NFC Championship concluded earlier today, and the game was far from a close one. The matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers was supposed to be a thriller. Two of the best teams facing off against one another after having one eventful year. Both teams had fascinating quarterbacks, the Eagles had Jalen Hurts, an MVP candidate, the man who has had an amazing year to date, and on the opposite side, there’s Brock Purdy, the 262nd pick in the draft who has shocked fans and scouts across the NFL with his stellar performance this season.
However, the game did not go as planned, at least not for the San Francisco 49ers. Due to circumstances beyond their control, their third-string quarterback, the man who has been responsible for leading their offense through the last few crucial games, Purdy had to leave the game with an elbow injury. This put the team at a disadvantage as they were already shorthanded at the quarterback position going into the game and due to the injury, the 49ers had to turn to their fourth-string quarterback, Josh Johnson.
If, God forbid, anything was to happen to Johnson during the game, the 49ers would have had no players left at the quarterback position. The team would have had to get their fullback to play QB. This loss was disheartening for the San Francisco 49ers and to Josh Johnson’s credit, he did step in and play his best as he completed 7/13 passes for 74 yards, but it was not enough to get the team past the Eagles.
The San Francisco 49ers have had a terrible year at the QB position:
The 49ers fell to the Eagles 31-7 and following the loss, tight end George Kittle was not happy. Kittle is one of the most passionate football players and is known to give it his everything when he is on the field. However, in this situation, he could not do anything and ended up feeling helpless. In the post-game press conference, the tight end spoke about what was running through his mind after the game.
Here’s what George Kittle had to say, “How does it feel to lose in an NFC Championship game because I don’t have a quarterback? Pretty shit*y to be honest…That’s about it.” One could tell from his facial expressions that he was disappointed and frustrated. It was not an ideal situation to be in. The team did not expect things to go this way and, with their starters, Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo out for the season, the 49ers were relying on Purdy to be their savior.
Injuries are the worst part of the game and for such a crucial player to be taken out in the middle of the most important game this entire season, is bound to lower the morale of the players on the field. George Kittle did not get the ball much throughout the game. He ended with 3 receptions for 32 yards, which is disappointing for a player of his caliber. The San Francisco 49ers have had a bad time at the quarterback position this year, however, the team does have a legit squad of players who can ball out. While their season may be done this year, hopefully, they are able to come back stronger from this the following season.
