It’s joint practice season. Teams have taken their training camp to the next level by practicing with other teams. This year, the Green Bay Packers are indulging in joint practice with the Cincinnati Bengals. Joint practices have their pros and cons but most notably, the practice sessions are known for brawls and fights between two teams’ players. In that trend, the Packers’ OG Elgton Jenkins recently caused a massive brawl after fighting with the Bengals linebacker Germaine Pratt.
During the Packers-Bengals joint practice camp on Wednesday, offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins was involved in two separate fights with the Bengals players. Initially, Jenkins got into a fight with Germaine Pratt but reports say the Bengals linebacker initiated the fight.
According to multiple reports, during a play, Pratt blocked Jenkins to the ground and started barking at him before throwing a punch at the Packers guard which led to a massive brawl involving both teams’ players. After some time, a second fight broke out, this time initiated by Jenkins per reports. The Packers’ 2-time Pro Bowl guard got into it with the Bengals’ veteran defensive lineman DJ Reader.
This time Jenkins blocked Reader to the ground and when both of them stood up, Jenkins reportedly took a swing at Reader causing a fight between the two. Finally, the Packers head coach Matt LaFleur booted off Jenkins from the practice camp after two fights.
DJ Reader fires shot at Elgton Jenkins following the fight
The Bengals’ veteran defensive lineman DJ Reader, who was involved in a fight with Elgton Jenkins, took shots at the Packers offensive guard following the joint practice session.
“I don’t even know that guy,” Reader said after practice. “He’s a JAG in my book … just a guy. We’re out here trying to get work in football, man, you’re out here losing and you want to go extra, try to hurt people, do extra stuff.”
Reader implied Jenkins was instigating fights since they weren’t having a good time in the practice, but the Packers’ star left tackle David Bakhtiari came to the defense of his teammate.
“Elgton totally was in the right the first time, I’m not going to say otherwise,” Bakhtiari said according to The Post. “Have to protect yourself, emotions get high. I know he’ll never do it in a game, he’s never done it in a game.” (H/T: New York Post)
Nonetheless, both teams will go against each other in their NFL preseason opener on Friday. The first-team players might not get a shot at the preseason game to avoid unnecessary injuries.
