Last year, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Giovani Bernard announced his retirement from the sport following a 10-year-long career. And now, just a few months after his retirement decision, a personal tragedy has struck his family.

Bernard took to social media to announce the death of his newborn son. On Wednesday, he shared an emotional post to announce the tragic news with a long message.

You were loved from the moment we learned of your presence, spoken too daily and prayed for by many. Your heart was strong and you were so playful from the moment we were able to lay eyes on you.

Gabriel was the second child of Giovanni and Chloe Call Bernard, who got married nearly 5 years ago. They welcomed their first child, Julian, in 2021.

Bernard also acknowledged his strong wife Chloe, who is going through a rough period. The former NFL RB wrote that he can’t imagine a life without her and that he is grateful to call her his wife.

You are more than what I could’ve imagined in a spouse, mother, and partner. You truly are remarkable. Our story together continues.

Bernard’s message reflected the depth of their grief but also his relationship with his wife Chloe Bernard. Friends, fans, and families have shared supportive messages to the couple in dire times.

Giovani Bernard played in the NFL for 10 seasons

Giovani Bernard spent 10 years in the league while playing as the running back for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bernard was drafted by the Bengals in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

In his first year in the league, Bernard finished 3rd in the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. He had another couple of good campaigns with the Bengals, but he never managed to cross the 1000-plus rushing yards mark in a season.

After spending 8 seasons in Cincinnati, the veteran running back then joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. He registered 3 total touchdowns in 2 seasons for the Bucs before he decided to hang up his boots. He announced his retirement in a series of Twitter posts back in April.
