Controversies aren’t an alien concept to celebrities, be they an actor, models, or professional athletes. Everything they do or say is viewed under the microscope and some or other person is bound to get offended.
The same happened way back in 2008 when Gisele Bündchen, who was dating NFL’s newest sensation and future legend Tom Brady, appeared on the cover of Vogue with NBA superstar LeBron James.
LeBron James was the first Black person to appear on the cover of Vogue and people completely overlooked that fact and choose to focus on the way he was portrayed on the cover. James was dribbling a basketball with his right hand and holding supermodel Gisele Bündchen‘s slim waist with his other hand. In addition, James was full of passion, with his bare teeth showing in a warrior-type pose.
People were offended by the fact that the cover looked way too much like the 1933 movie “King Kong” and Fay Wray as the damsel in distress. The majority of the people thought that a Black man was portrayed in a beastly way in contrast to White athletes who have the knight in shining armor type smile pasted on their faces. This cover provoked the idea of a ‘dangerous Black man’ in many people’s minds.
“Everything my name is on is going to be criticized in a good way or bad way. Who cares what anyone says?” King James told The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Vogue’s spokesperson said Patrick O’Connell, “We think LeBron James and Gisele Bundchen look beautiful together and we are honored to have them on the cover. So when you have a cover that reminds people of King Kong and brings those stereotypes to the front, Black man wanting white woman, it’s not innocent.”
Gisele Bündchen divorced Tom Brady after 13 years of marriage
Gisele Bündchen married Tom Brady in 2009, and the couple has two kids – a son Benjamin and a daughter, Vivian. The power couple was happily married for 13 years and in October last year, they announced their split, which came as a shock to everyone.
There were rumors that Gisele decided to way out of the door because Brady announced his comeback after 40 days of retiring. However, the Brazilian supermodel quashed these rumors in a recent interview and said she has nothing but love for Brady.
Gisele was linked to her jujutsu trainer during her divorce proceedings and fans thought she cheated on Tom Brady, but that wasn’t the case. She was linked to a few other men, which all turned out to be nothing but rumors. The 42-year-old model is currently enjoying her life and focusing all her energy on her biodiversity project in Brazil.
