Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe and former Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson had a constructive debate about the ‘Greatest Receiver of All Time’ in a recent episode of Sharpe’s podcast Club Shay Shay. The debate was primarily between the San Francisco 49ers legend Jerry Rice, former Vikings WR Randy Moss, and another former Cowboys wideout Terrell Owens.
While speaking on the Club Shay Shay podcast, Johnson was asked by Shannon Sharpe about who he thinks is the greatest wide receiver of all time, to which Johnson first replied that even though he acknowledges Jerry’s accomplishments, he has to go with another great wideout. “The greatest receiver I’ve ever seen is, Jerry, great numbers, what he has done for the game, but to me Randy (Moss) and TO (Terrell Owens), we will never see anything like that ever again,” said Johnson about Moss and Owens.
Johnson went on about how he witnessed Moss and Owens up close in action, and Shannon cut him off to remind him about Jerry Rice‘s numbers. He asked Johnson, “you think somebody’s gonna break Jerry’s records?” to which Johnson simply replied “Who?” which made Shannon burst out with laughter. “I don’t think people realize Jerry got 208 touchdowns, 22 thousand yards,” said a laughing Sharpe.
Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson agree on the best receiver of all time
Sharpe then continued that Randy Moss and Terrell Owens’ records can be broken, but Rice’s numbers are out of reach for most of the other receivers. Furthermore, Johnson agreed with the sentiment and agreed that Jerry Rice is in a league of his own.
“Jerry was a great one man, in his own right and when we talk about the greatest of all time, I think Jerry should be in a category of his own,” said former Bengals wideout Johnson about Jerry Rice.
The former Denver Broncos tight end Sharpe agreed with Johnson about Jerry being the best wide receiver of all time. “I think Jerry’s No.1, I got T.O .(Terrell Owens) no.2, I got Randy 3,” said Sharpe. “Some people put Randy at one. I just don’t know how somebody goes over Jerry, given his longevity.”
Johnson was quick to cut off the Hall of Fame tight end and explained to him that he agrees with Sharpe’s point. “That’s why I put him in his own class,” said Chad Johnson to Shannon.
Even though Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson tried to make an argument for his favorite receivers Randy Moss and Terrell Owens, he ended up agreeing with Sharpe about Jerry Rice being the best receiver of all time, and given Rice’s numbers it’d be hard for anyone to argue against it.
