It’s clear that Robert Saleh wasn’t anticipating losing Aaron Rodgers in their first game. But the New York Jets head coach isn’t ready to give up on the veteran quarterback just yet.

The unfortunate injury to Rodgers came as a shock to the entire country, which tuned in to watch Monday Night Football. From fans to analysts, not a single person who loves football was able to grasp what had gone down in the first couple of minutes.

But Saleh had to take matters into his own hands and recalibrate his team to suit Zach Wilson. He was able to do just that, as the 24-year-old finished the game with 14 of 21 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown with an average of 66.7%. But there’s no guarantee that this will be the case going forward. For now, they are sticking with the 2021 second-overall pick.

In the meantime, the Jets have to come up with a solution for how to deal with Aaron Rodgers in the long run. He is out for the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles. But Robert Saleh is sticking by his quarterback’s side and claims that it would come as a surprise if the 39-year-old did not play for the Jets in the foreseeable future.

“I would be shocked if this is the way he gonna go out,” he told the press after Wednesday’s practice when asked if he had any discussions with Rodgers about his future. “But at the same time, he is working through a lot of headspace and things that he needs to deal with. That would be the last thing I would talk to him about.”

The eve of 9/11 hasn’t been kind to New York. First, the New York Giants were hammered 40-0 by the Cowboys, and then Aaron Rodgers suffered an injury the following day. They can take solace in the fact that the Jets did manage to win in the end. But the question arises: has the damage already been done?

Rodgers sitting out an entire season is a massive headache for the Big Apple franchise. After his successful surgery, he now has to go through months of rehabilitation. Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard shares how painful and lonely it gets during that period.

“It’s never good seeing a player go down,” Shepard told the New York Post. “I know the pain he’s going through, having to deal with that, and the recovery. [It’s] dark and lonely times.”

The veteran playmaker ruptured his left Achilles while running a route against the Cowboys in 2021. As a result, he missed the final three games and had to go through surgery and extensive rehab. He was able to start for the Giants on the opening day of the next season, nine months after incurring the injury.

Shepard was watching the game on Monday and realized instantly that something was wrong. “I already knew it,” he continued. “They said it was an ankle injury, [but] the only thing I could think of when I saw the force was Achilles.”

Aaron Rodgers will miss the rest of the season. The Jets front office is reportedly sticking with Zach Wilson and Tim Boyle as their two designated quarterbacks. But there were rumors that they might take a look at free agency if needed.
