Foster Moreau‘s story is already one for the ages. Overcoming the scare of cancer and returning to play for his hometown franchise, the New Orleans Saints, is enough to write a good Hollywood tearjerker. However, his story was dealt a big jolt on Thursday at the Super Dome.

In his second start for the Saints, Moreau had the opportunity to possibly make a match-winning difference. His team was second-best throughout the night against an aggressive Jacksonville Jaguars side.

Trailing by seven points late in the fourth quarter, Saints quarterback Derek Carr threw a dime at Moreau in the red zone. Unfortunately, the ball bounced off his palms, and the pass was called incomplete. On the fourth down, Carr’s pass was deflected away, and the Jaguars won the game 31-24.

It wasn’t the moment that any Saints fan was hoping to see. They were fighting to get their fourth win of the season but ended up with 3-4. In the final seconds of the game, the Amazon Prime Video broadcast panned toward the home team’s dugout. A disheartened Foster Moreau was being consoled by his teammates.

The Jaguars dominated proceedings early on, and at one point it seemed like a replay of the Miami-Denver game. A resurgence in the fourth quarter had the stadium buzzing with back-to-back touchdowns from Tysom Hill and Michael Thomas.

Then came the decisive moment for Foster Moreau, which he failed to take advantage of. His fairy-tale return to play football came to an abrupt end.

“It’s tough,” Moreau told Katherine Terell of ESPN. “It’s a dark place to be in the National Football League.”

In March, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma during a physical with the Saints. He later tweeted to announce the unfortunate news to the public. It would not have been possible for him to return to the field if it had not been discovered early. As a result, the doctors were able to treat it successfully, and the LSU graduate made a complete recovery.

Shortly after, he signed with the New Orleans team and was enjoying life once again until yesterday. Even though he dropped a crucial catch and paid a heavy price, no one can take away his life-altering achievement. Moreau will have more chances in the future, and it starts against the Indianapolis Colts on matchday 8.
