“I would have myself at No. 1,” NFL prospect Hendon Hooker oozes EXTREME confidence, labels himself ‘the best quarterback in the draft’

The 2023 NFL draft is just a few days away now. This draft class has a lot of potential superstar quarterbacks, with at least five of them being predicted to go in the first round itself.
C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young are projected by many mock draft experts to be the first overall pick by the Carolina Panthers. Hendon Hooker, the quarterback for Tennessee, is also touted to be a first-round pick.
However, his draft stock isn’t as high as that of other signal callers in his class. Hooker is widely considered to be the fifth-best quarterback of 2023, but he isn’t buying that narrative at all.
In a conversation with USA Today, Hendon Hooker was asked where he would place himself in the draft, and his answer was a perfect example of ‘tooting your own horn.’ The 25-year-old said, “I would have myself at No. 1. I won’t give you a ranking, but I will say I give myself No. 1. My football IQ. How I’m able to process things at a high speed? My competitive nature and how accurate I am with the ball. I can make every level throw and also deadly in the run game as well.”
Hooker’s statement is in stark contrast to his S2 Cognition test result in which he scored just 46% and was second last in the list of quarterbacks. It is a cognizance test that is used by teams to determine athletes’ split-second information processing and decision-making ability.

Hendon Hooker’s college stats don’t reflect his confidence
Hendon Hooker started his collegiate career at Virginia Tech back in 2018. He then transferred to Tennessee Volunteers, where he skyrocketed the program with his presence. He threw for 6,080 yards, 58 touchdowns, and just 5 interceptions during his time as a Vol.
In his entire college career, Hooker amassed 7656 yards for a 66.6 completion percentage, 68 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. While his stats are good, his ability to win the game isn’t as good. The 25-year-old has a 22-14 record in his career.
Teams are looking for a gunslinger, of course, but he should also have the presence of mind and ability to lead a franchise to victory. While Hendon Hooker has a lot of confidence in himself, maybe teams won’t see him the same way.
Whether he is the first to be taken off the board or maybe later on in the draft is yet to be seen. The 2023 NFL draft will take place from April 27 to April 29 in Kansas City, home of Super Bowl LVI champions.
