Hail Mary plays are the most exciting uncertainties in the world of football. Former Dallas Cowboys QB Roger Staubach first created it, Aaron Rodgers almost perfected it and a lot of teams won crucial games with it. West Virginia is the latest entrant in the list of victims of the dreaded Hail Mary play. They played their game against the Houston Cougars on Friday and lost in heartbreaking fashion.
West Virginia came into the game having won four of their five games to start their college football season. The Cougars, on the other hand, started their season 2-3. The Mountaineers of West Virginia were favorites to improve their record further by winning their game against Houston. However, the Cougars disagreed with that and stunned the Mountaineers with a last-second 49-yard Hail Mary.
West Virginia were leading the game, 39-35 with just three seconds left in the game. It was their game to lose. And lose they did, as Houston’s QB Donovan Smith moved to his left and threw a 49-yard Hail Mary bomb that was somehow caught by WR Stephon Johnson Jr. for a game-winning touchdown. It was tipped initially as players from teams fought for the ball. It eventually landed in the hands of Johnson, giving Houston their third win of the season.
West Virginia will look to bounce back from this loss in their next game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Cougars meanwhile, will host the Texas Longhorns in their next game on Saturday. They will look to cause another upset next weekend as well.
