The New York Giants and the talented running back Saquon Barkley are in the midst of contract extension talks. The Giants placed Barkley under the franchise tag back in March to buy some time to get a deal done. And now, the renowned NFL insider Dianna Russini has given a major update on Barkley’s contract negotiations.

“The Giants front office seems really dug in on this. Both sides have had numerous conversations over the last few months but as of late, nothing has been very serious in sense of moving this forward to get a long-term deal done for Saquon Barkley,” said Russini during a recent episode of NFL Live on ESPN. “Right now where it stands, the New York Giants aren’t moving.”

ESPN insider Dianna Russini also claimed that the Giants feel comfortable in the situation as they believe Barkley will not sit out the 2023 season due to the guaranteed money of approximately $10 million.

The G-Men and Barkley have until July 17 to get a long-term deal done. If not, the 2-time Pro Bowl RB would have to make a decision whether he wants to play for the Giants in 2023 under the franchise tag or if he wants to sit out next year without playing.

Many people, including the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce have advised Saquon Barkley not to sit out the upcoming season. But Barkley still has a lot of time to decide his next move if he can’t reach the middle ground on a long-term deal with the Giants.

The explosive running back Saquon Barkley rejected the Giants’ multi-year contract offer worth up to $14 million a season during the 2022 season, according to multiple reports.

After Barkley rejected their offer, the Giants placed him under the franchise tag, which is worth around $10 million. Barkley is still negotiating with the Giants’ GM Joe Schoen, but if he can’t get a long-term deal before July 17, then he will have to make a decision about whether or not he wants to play in the 2023 season.

The 2-time Pro Bowl RB will probably not secure a long-term deal with the Giants and is likely to play under the franchise tag in 2023. Barkley has been a major part of the New York-based franchise’s offense, but his injury struggles have been a major concern for the Giants. Barkley has 2 Pro Bowl campaigns and 3 1000-yard seasons in his 5-year career so far, but he missed substantial time due to injuries.
