The NFL is back on high alert yet again after rumors of the ‘second wave’ violations after the massive suspension of players last April due to gambling. The players are strictly prohibited from betting on any league game after the Supreme Court ruling several years ago.

However, some players were found guilty of betting and suffered year-long suspensions. NFL suspended a total of five players last year for betting violations. Three players were suspended indefinitely while the other two served different terms for their violations. Detroit Lions receiver Quintez Cephus, former Lions safety C.J. Moore and former Washington Commanders DE Shaka Toney were suspended last year indefinitely for at least a season.

According to a report from ESPN, the league has started another process of investigation and it is speculated that there will be more players who will get suspended. However, the parameters of their suspension are still unknown and no one knows who the NFL is currently investigating.

The NFL is a high-yielding sport when betting is concerned, and the league has worked very hard to systematically organize the whole process. The league has been working with sportsbooks and integrity firms to catch the improper bettors.

“We have long focused on expanding our monitoring efforts, working with a variety of tools and resources while remaining in sync with the growing regulated market,” David Highhill, who oversees sports betting for the NFL, told ESPN. “Our monitoring efforts include internal measures, along with resources and services provided by our partners to ensure we have the most comprehensive information possible.”

As per the strict rules, NFL players are prohibited from betting on any game played. However, after a later ruling, the players playing in the league were prohibited from betting on any sports event around the country.

However, it gets pretty difficult to track all the wrongdoers, and the NFL has beefed up its security measures to counteract that successfully. The league has incorporated things like geotags and IPs to find the locations where the bets are being placed.

“During the NFL’s investigations,” Ned Ehrlich stated. “We have learned that these apps [like FanDuel] are highly sensitive and very sophisticated at tracking, among other things, user location to be sure that people using the app are not ‘prohibited gamblers’ and/or that the person using the apps is in a location where they are allowed to place bets on the app.”

The NFL is now on the lookout for many more culprits who are betting on sporting events while being part of the league. However, the content of this new investigation is still unknown and will be revealed in due time.
