On Saturday, the New England Patriots went against the Green Bay Packers in their preseason matchup. The Patriots were leading 21-17 early in the fourth quarter. But the game had to be stopped due to an unfortunate and scary injury to the Pats’ rookie defensive back Isaiah Bolden, who had to be carted off the field.
The Packers were trying to erase a 4-point deficit and were facing a 3rd and 7 during the fourth quarter of the game. QB Sean Clifford completed a pass to Malik Heath to move the sticks. During the play, Bolden, who was covering Heath, collided with his own teammate Calvin Munson while trying to make a play on the Packers receiver.
Bolden collided with Munson and immediately fell to the ground. The Patriots’ medical staff rushed to the field to check on Bolden. As the medics were attending Bolden, both teams’ players were on the field and some were on their knees praying.
The rookie cornerback was eventually carted off the field and both teams decided not to continue the game. The game was called off with the Patriots leading 21-17 with more than 10 minutes left in the final quarter.
The Jackson State product Isaiah Bolden was a 7th-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He was the only player to get drafted from an HBCU this year. In 2021, he led the entire nation in kickoff return average with 36.6 yards per return.
The Patriots say Isaiah Bolden has movement on all extremities
After the preseason game was called off due to Isaiah Bolden’s injury, the New England-based football team gave an update on the rookie cornerback’s injury in a statement.
“Patriots cornerback Isaiah Bolden sustained an injury during the fourth quarter of tonight’s game,” the team’s statement reads. “He had feeling in all his extremities, but has been taken to a local hospital for further tests and observation.” (H/T: Patriots.com)
The Patriots head coach Bill Belichick also appreciated the league calling off the game saying, “That was the right thing to do.” Matt LaFleur, the head coach of the Packers, called it a very scary ending to the game and also agreed with the league’s decision to call off the game.
Before Bolden’s injury, the Patriots QB Bailey Zappe and the rookie receiver Kayshon Boutte impressed the crowd at the Lambeau Field with a 40-yard touchdown play. Zappe looked good in the preseason game amidst the ongoing QB battle between him and Mac Jones.
