Amidst the NFL offseason festivities, tragic news brought tears to all eyes when an 18-year-old football player lost his life in a drive-by shooting incident in Houston, on March 10. Hundreds of people gathered a week later to pay tribute to the late local football standout, Jarvon Coles

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is a Houston local, covered all the expenses of Coles’ funeral as a heart-warming and surprising gesture for the Coles. The quarterback learned about the tragic incident via the media, and as soon as he did, he went down to lend a helping hand.

Just learned that #Eagles QB Jalen Hurts read about the passing of this football player from a rival high school and decided to pay for his funeral expenses. Heartwarming end to a gut-wrenching story.

It’s because of him that Coles’ service at Light of the World Christian Fellowship Church took place peacefully, on March 16. In fact, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Houston Mayor John Whitmire have declared March 16 as “Jarvon Coles Day” to honor the high school senior.

Hurts completed his high school education at Channelview High School, which is rival to Coles’ North Shore High School. The young football player was a brilliant student with a 4.1 GPA and had a bright future of being accepted by 15 different colleges.

But on March 10, he was found unresponsive after sustaining a gun wound at a house party near Humble. As per the police report, the shooters targeted the part from a distance of a block away, before running away via their vehicle in Houston.

Jalen Hurts’ off-field mission to combat gun culture

The Eagles quarterback’s heartwarming gesture was well appreciated by everyone, although he didn’t intend to flaunt it out to the media. But this isn’t the first time Hurts has stepped in to provide to the victim of gun violence.

Over the years, Hurts has made it clear that he doesn’t support the open gun culture in the United States. He was one of the faces of Philly’s campaign of buying back weapons, in collaboration with the local police.

Moreover, the Pro Bowler also partnered with Penn Medicine to offer relief to the victims of gun violence and also went to meet the hospitalized victims. Hurts works on raising awareness of the dreadful effects gun violence has on the victims and the communities.
