The Jacksonville Jaguars acquired wide receiver Calvin Ridley in a mid-season trade with the Atlanta Falcons back in November 2022. Ridley missed the entire 2022 season due to a suspension by the league over gambling violations. He’s now ready to get on the field in 2023 and his teammate Jamal Agnew warns the opponents to watch out for him.
“Just the way he moves, you can see,” the Jaguars return specialist Jamal Agnew recently told talkSPORT, via NFL.com. “His route running, he can run, catch anything you throw to him. He’s just different, man. You just watch him out there, he’s a mismatch nightmare. In my opinion, I don’t think anybody can guard him in the league.”
The former Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley took a break from football and stayed away from the Atlanta-based organization to focus on his mental health in 2021. During that time, Ridley allegedly took part in gambling activities. After the league found out Ridley is betting on NFL games, they ended up suspending him for the entire 2022 season.
Apart from his off-field actions, Ridley has been a tremendous player whenever he’s on the field. Ridley was drafted by the Falcons in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. During his rookie year, Ridley registered 821 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns. The following season he accounted for 866 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns while playing along with star pass catcher Julio Jones.
In 2020, when Jones missed most of the season, Ridley became the primary target for Matt Ryan and had a breakout season. He had 1374 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns and solidified himself as a great receiver in the league. Now, after a couple of years off the football field, Ridley is looking to get back his prime form in Jacksonville.
Calvin Ridley is a massive asset for the Jaguars
During the 2022 off-season, the Jaguars spent a lot to put an offensive group together including WR Christian Kirk that could help develop their franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
However, none of them are as talented as the former Falcons wideout Calvin Ridley. The Jaguars acquired Ridley from the Falcons in exchange for a 2023 fourth-rounder and a 2024 conditional fifth-rounder.
Lawrence already had a great season in 2022 and proved that he is capable of leading an NFL franchise. He led the Jags to a 27-point comeback victory against the Los Angeles Chargers in the postseason. Now, with Ridley as his true number 1 receiver, Lawrence could potentially have an MVP-caliber season.
