The NFL does not return until September when the regular season starts. Still, it seems the battle has begun early this season with Cincinnati Bengals’ wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce involved in a war of words during the offseason itself.
It all started last weekend, during the Bengals’ minicamp when Ja’Marr Chase was asked to name the best player in the league. While the question seemed harmless in nature, the answer from the wide receiver’s response included a big dig on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Chase buckled down on his quarterback, Joe Burrow labelling him as the best player, but finished by saying “Pat who.” This has not gone down well with the majority of Chiefs fans who feel that he unnecessarily disrespected Mahomes, a player who proved his credentials yet again by winning the Super Bowl last season.
Travis Kelce warned Ja’Marr Chase about disrespecting Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes
Mahomes’ close friend and teammate, Travis Kelce took offence to Chase’s comments and spoke about it on his podcast. Kelce backed the Bengals wide receiver for supporting his own quarterback but urged him to never disrespect Mahomes.
“It is what it is, dog,” Kelce said on the New Heights podcast. “Who doesn’t love some good locker room banter, man? Shoutout to Ja’Marr Chase for holding it down for his QB, but don’t you ever disrespect Pat Mahomes now. If you want to talk your s**t, talk your s**t, pimp. Just better back it up,” finished Kelce.
The war of words didn’t stop there, and now Ja’Marr Chase has fired back at Kelce by posting a fiery response on his Instagram story. The 23-year-old took to his official account and wrote, “On mami call me the villain,” embedding an Instagram post by Sports Illustrated that highlighted Kelce’s comments in his podcast.
In the meantime, even Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took a subtly veiled dig at Chase, following the latter’s comments. Mahomes posted a picture of him with his two Super Bowl rings, with a quote “That’s who.”
While the war of words continues off the gridiron, the Bengals and Chiefs will look to settle scores on the pitch this season when they face off on New Year’s Eve next season. Their previous encounter came in the AFC Championship 2023 game, which the Chiefs won by a 23-20 margin on the route to their successful Super Bowl campaign.
