It has been an eventful couple of weeks of NFL training camp, from trade drama to failed contracts to major players picking up injuries. The Cincinnati Bengals fall into the latter category, as their starting quarterback, Joe Burrow, picked up a calf injury and could be out for a while. According to the medical staff, fans can expect to see their favorite player back as early as the Week 1 opener against the Cleveland Browns. However, his wide receiver partner, Ja’Marr Chase, doesn’t want him to rush his recovery.

“I told him that, with all honesty, I don’t want him there,” Chase said in an interview after the Bengals camp on Friday. The 23-year-old even reminded Burrow of his own previous injury. “I sat out an extra game to let my hip heal,” he added. “You don’t want to cause any other problems later. We’re good as long as you’re there after Week 5.”

The Bengals don’t have tough matches in the first few weeks except for their ties against their AFC North rivals, the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens. Maybe Burrow missing out would be good against the Browns. Since his draft in 2020, they have failed to win any games against Cleveland.

Nevertheless, losing two back-to-back games is not an ideal start for anyone, let alone for a team looking to win the championship. However, Chase remains optimistic and understands that finishing the season on a high note matters most. But he also knows that having his former LSU teammate around helps ease the situation. But he realizes that patience is the key to success.

“I wish I did,” he told Brian Baldinger and Andrew Siciliano of the NFL Network. “He told me he doesn’t know when he’ll be back, but he’ll be back soon.”

As Joe Burrow remains sidelined for a while, the Bengals have three players fighting to replace the 26-year-old. They are one of fantasy football’s favorites to reach the Super Bowl, but that was with Burrow on the team. Only veteran quarterbacks Trevor Siemian, Jake Browning, and Reid Sinnett remain.

Siemian is likely to get the nod for now due to his experience in the field. However, this will be his first year in Bengals colors after a year with the Chicago Bears. He only played 2 games because Justin Fields picked up an injury. In the latest Cincinnati training camp, Siemian was seen taking charge of the offense. He missed just one of 16 passes in 11-on-11 in leading the Ones to a pair of touchdowns.

They are capable players, but most fans would agree that the Bengals now have less chance to go deep into the postseason. Joe Burrow played 16 games last season, winning 12. He recorded 4475 passing yards with 35 touchdowns.
