The 2023 NFL season is only a week away, and the Kansas City Chiefs are nowhere near striking a deal with Chris Jones. The defensive tackle is holding out for a suitable raise in his current contract. The delay has rubbed off on teammate Travis Kelce, who pleaded for the Pro Bowler’s quick return while his brother and Eagles center Jason Kelce, joked about the situation.
Kicking off Season 2 of the New Heights show, the Kelce brothers dove right into the debate that has the NFL buzzing. Despite Travis’ genuine concern about Jones missing out on a chunk of the season, Jason advised the Super Bowl winner to sit out most of the season.
“Is there any updates on Chris Jones?,” Jason Kelce asked Travis. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Travis then, almost like a cry for help, shouted, “Chris, can you please come back? You’re really scaring me, man.” The Chiefs’ tight end revealed that he wants to win another Super Bowl ring with him.
Hearing the desperation in his brother’s voice, Jason could not help but poke fun. “Well, I think you guys aren’t paying him enough. He should hold off as long as possible. Specially Week 10 (referring to Eagles-Chiefs game) You need to hold strong, my man! For all the other D-tackles in the NFL. You cannot take this injustice!”
What is the contract situation for Chris Jones?
The Chiefs’ front office has been trying its best to strike a good deal with the 29-year-old since the offseason. As per ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, they want the best for both parties.
“The Chiefs would like to give him that long-term extension,” Darlington reported. “I’m told that they are still optimistic that they will get it done before training camp.”
Unfortunately, even after the preseason games, a new deal seems to be off the table for now. Jones seeks a deal that will reflect his MVP-level performances in the past few seasons. In 2022, he managed 15.5 sacks and 44 tackles in 17 games. Truly remarkable numbers.
The Ole Miss alumnus wants to earn something similar to what another Pro Bowl DE is earning. He believes that his performance deserves what Aaron Donald ($31.66 million per year) is making.
With no middle ground in sight, the Kansas City franchise has chosen to keep Chris Jones on the PUP list. This means he will at least miss the first four games. But Insiders claim he is likely to hold out until Week 8.
