Jason Whitlock is a controversial figure in sports. The beef between Jason Whitlock and Stephen A. Smith saw another layer being added to it Friday night. In his podcast Fearless, Whitlock took a dig at the veteran sports analyst by comparing him to his ESPN colleague Shannon Sharpe.
Now, let’s get one thing clear: Whitlock is not a fan of either of the individuals. In the case of Smith, the reason is apparent. The two individuals don’t see eye-to-eye and they can’t stand each other. But the interesting part of his latest episode was that he chose to side with Sharpe to taunt Smith.
He claimed that Shannon has done a surprisingly remarkable job since he retired from football. He was already popular while being the host of Undisputed, even though the 55-year-old created his podcast show, Club Shay Shay.
According to Whitlock, Sharpe will leave Smith behind if this keeps up.
I am not the biggest fan of Shannon Sharpe. But the show he is putting together has so much mammoth potential. I haven't seen it from any other professional athlete transitioning into a high level of professional broadcasting.Jason Whitlock via Fearless Show
Whitlock said Smith is not as good as Shannon. He also claimed that audiences must endure the 56-year-old rather than be fond of his content. Whitlock continued:
People like him [Smith] because of the position ESPN has put him in. They have to deal with him. People don't really like him. People look at Shannon and feel like, 'Man, he earned this.' Shannon Sharpe is better and more authentic than Stephen A. Smith.
Jason Whitlock questioned the credibility of Stephen A. Smith’s basketball career
By now, every avid watcher of ESPN for the past 15 or so years has heard about Stephen A. Smith‘s short-lived basketball career. While studying at Winston-Salem University, Smith was enlisted in the basketball program.
The Big Apple native mentioned that part of his life in his recent biography, ‘Straight Shooter: A Memoir of Second Chances and First Takes.’
During his podcast, Whitlock read the part revealing how Smith was recruited to leave New York and move to North Carolina. He believed that Smith had hyperbolized some areas to make it sound cooler. This is what Whitlock said:
When I first read this book, it was so farcical. In February of 1988, a former Winston Salem basketball player put Smith through a playground workout in New York City. In February!
He emphasized the month because, in February, the weather in Jersey Shores is very rough.
February, New York City, and according to Stephen A. Smith, he is going through a playground tryout on an outdoor playground, and he wants us to believe that? I am reading this, and I am going, 'Holy Cow! Who is serving this up, and who is believing?'
Smith has yet to reply to Whitlock’s comments. But when he does, and he usually doesn’t miss out on ‘serving up’ replies, one has to expect something spicy.
