Looks like the San Francisco 49ers won’t get the privilege of forgetting the controversy over their choice to get the ball first in overtime, especially since behind-the-scenes footage from the Super Bowl LVIII popped up on the internet, to which a former NFL star Jay Cutler revealed someone’s getting fired from the franchise.
“Inside the NFL” captured quite interesting before and after moments from the game– right at the time of the fateful coin toss that began overtime. Just when the 49ers decided to take the ball first for the extra period, the sheer shock on the Chiefs’ faces became evident.
In the footage, the Chiefs’ star quarterback Patrick Mahomes can be seen repeating “They want it. They want the ball” on a loop as he ran off the field in disbelief after the coin toss. While walking around the sideline, he again exclaimed:
They wanted it, baby.Patrick Mahomes said
Accompanying him was the Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who seemed equally surprised by the Niners’ decision when the camera panned at him, and said:
We want them to have the ball. They want it they can have it.Travis Kelce said
What happened after that has been witnessed by all! As it turned out an outrageous mistake on the part of the Niners that made Mahomes’ shocking celebration seemed apparent. But at the same time, it cost the 49ers the Super Bowl.
Being absolutely stunned by what he has seen, the former Chicago Bears quarterback claimed:
He was shocked. I was shocked. I think everyone was shocked. It’s like you’re going to give Patrick Mahomes the ball second and give him four downs. Someone’s getting fired.Jay Cutler said
The overtime blunder in the Super Bowl that haunts Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers
Ever since the 49ers’ mistake in overtime came under the limelight, head coach Kyle Shanahan had to face immense criticism as he was the one who decided to take the ball first for the overtime.
In fact, the “Inside the NFL” also focused on star fullback Kyle Juszczyk on the sideline, who admitted he didn’t understand what it meant until the very moment it happened. He also said to his teammate realizing that even if the 49ers score a touchdown, the ball will eventually land in the Chiefs’ hand.
Contrary to this, Shanahan admitted he didn’t know it would happen. Unfortunately, it happened and the Niners could do nothing but a field goal while having the possession of the ball. Many of the 49ers’ players admitted after the game that they weren’t aware of the new overtime rule, and neither did their head coach.
