“You weren’t good enough!” Ex-Commanders HC Jay Gruden throws massive shade at Robert Griffin III claiming neither Cleveland nor Baltimore wanted him
Gruden implied that RG3 was in a downward slump and there were better options to replace him at Washington.

Robert Griffin III hasn’t taken a snap for the Washington Commanders (known as Redskins back then) since 2014, and yet recently, the only discussion he can have is about his stint with the franchise. Griffin is currently engaged in a Twitter war with former head coach Jay Gruden.
During the recent wild card game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Philadelphia Eagles, Gruden observed that Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was struggling quite a bit. And it was not entirely his fault. Gruden pointed out that the defensive line was failing to protect him from the Buccaneers blitz.
Gruden, who coached the Commanders from 2014-2019, wrote on X (formerly Twitter),
If I ever put a QB through what Philly is putting Jalen through, I apologize. Pick up a blitz!Gruden
RG3 noticed this post and fired back with a tweet of his own. He only wrote two words, “Say what?” as if trying to remind Gruden of the past.
The feud further escalated where Gruden didn’t hold punches and even claimed Griffin wasn’t ‘good enough’.
You weren’t good enough. Kirk was better. Cleveland didn’t want you. Baltimore did either. Quit blaming me.Gruden wrote in a now deleted tweet
Jay Gruden claimed Robert Griffin III was never a good fit for Washington
The feud reached a new height when Gruden appeared on the ‘Grant and Danny 106.7 The Fan‘ podcast. He joked about his popularity in Washington while speaking about his interactions with RG3. Not only that, he also took a dig at Griffin, stating that Kirk Cousins was a better quarterback than him.
Gruden said:
When you’re coaching football, you have to play the best player in your building at every position, not just quarterback, and it wasn’t just me who made that decision; it was everybody in the building.
He further added:
Everybody was on board that Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy were better fits for what we were trying to do, and maybe Griffin lost a step with the zone reads. Kirk was and is just a better passer, a better player, and he’s proven that.
Even though RG3 tried to prove that he was hard done by the coaching staff in Washington, he did lose the killer edge after the devastating ACL tear against the Seattle Seahawks in 2013. Cousins just took over from him and never looked back, eventually leading to his departure to the Cleveland Browns in 2016.
But that doesn’t take away from the fact that in the first few years since his draft, the Commanders fans spent some of the best years of the 2010s. Gruden can’t be the only one to receive the blame for RG3’s untimely exit. The Mike and Kyle Shanahan era with Dan Snyder in charge of Washington, didn’t necessarily have the best working environment.
