The San Francisco 49ers, led by their star quarterback Brock Purdy, are currently preparing for their much-anticipated Super Bowl game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Ahead of the game, the 49ers owner Jed York completely dumps on his former quarterbacks, Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, while disclosing the exact moment Kyle Shanahan realized Purdy might be the best quarterback on their roster.

During Thursday’s press conference in Santa Clara, the 49ers owner Jed York revealed that even before the 2022 season, head coach Shanahan knew Brock Purdy was the right fit for them. York said that just a week into the 2022 training camp, Shanahan pulled him aside and told him their third-string QB might be their best option.

That’s generally not a good thing, when your coach tells you you’ve got to talk. I’m like, ‘All right, what’s up? And he’s like, ‘I think our third-string quarterback is our best quarterback.'
Jed York told reporters

At that time, their former third overall pick, Trey Lance, was gearing up to be their starting quarterback, while 2-time Super Bowl champion Jimmy Garoppolo was expected to be the team’s second-stringer. Purdy — who was drafted by the Niners as the last pick in 2022 — was not even guaranteed a spot at that stage.

However, as fate would have, Purdy took over the starting QB job during the later stages of the 2022 regular season after both Garoppolo and Lance went down with injuries. Mr. Irrelevant grabbed the opportunity with both hands and never looked back.

Later, an injury to Purdy in the NFC championship game led to people believing Trey Lance might get a second opportunity in San Francisco. But Purdy swiftly recovered from his injury and Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

Jed York liked Kyle Shanahan’s honesty about Brock Purdy and Trey Lance

The 49ers sold the farm to draft Trey Lance as the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. So, when head coach Kyle Shanahan hinted to owner Jed York that they might have to move on from him within two years, the owner wasn’t a big fan of that news.

One thing that owners don’t love to hear, when they’ve invested money and/or draft picks or both into people, is that the last pick in the draft is the guy we think is the best. That’s generally not great news. But he’s honest and he let it play out the right way.
Jed York told the reporters on Thursday

However, in the end, it all worked out well for the 49ers as Brock Purdy ended up having a great season in San Francisco. He was named the finalist for the MVP award. But, he would be focused on the bigger price, i.e., the Lombardi Trophy.
