“He is here to win a Super Bowl”: Jerry Jones believes Mike McCarthy will lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl while dismissing Sean Payton’s odds of being the HC
Sean Payton, Jerry Jones, and Mike McCarthy
Jerry Jones is back in the news and this time it is not because of something he said or a decision that he took but due to the rumors surrounding Sean Payton being in the running for the Head Coaching job of the Dallas Cowboys. Jones chose Mike McCarthy to be the front man for the Cowboys after the team struggled for years under Jason Garrett’s tutelage. The coach may have changed for the team but the team’s fate remains the same.
In his first year, McCarthy faced a setback as Dak Prescott got a devastating ankle injury. Last season the team was healthy but the Cowboys had an average season and did not make it past the first round of the playoffs. The team’s owner Jerry Jones took some time speaking to the media on the upcoming NFL season and how he expects them to fare this year. He is usually known for his warm and friendly smile and personality but one question, in particular, turned that frown upside down.

“Sean Payton shouldn’t be out there”: Jerry Jones is tired of dismissing the Sean Payton rumors
The owner was asked about Sean Payton and if there was any substance to the claims that he was in the running for the position of Head Coach in Dallas but Jones straight out dismissed those rumors by stating, “Sean Payton shouldn’t be out there, for him, the Cowboys, that’s just sheer out of the air. It’s well known we’re good friends and we think a lot of him as a head coach. But in this case, asking the way you’re asking, he shouldn’t be a conversation piece.”
Payton and Jones are very good friends and even in the past, there have been similar rumors hinting that the owner could hire him to coach the Cowboys, the two bonded and got close when Payton was an assistant coach under Bill Parcells. However, coming to the present, Jerry Jones is adamant and has clearly implied that there is only one man who is and will remain the coach for the Cowboys, Mike McCarthy.
“Mike has got an opportunity here to win a Super Bowl, that’s really the measurement that I look at but it’s also an eternity between right now and next year,” the owner specified. The reason that Jones wants McCarthy as his HC is that he has Super Bowl experience but more importantly, he will abide by everything that will be told to him. The case was similar with Jason Garrett as well, if Sean Payton comes in, he will take the Cowboys to the Super Bowl but then the reason for the team’s success will not be attributed to Jerry and all the credit will go to Payton and we know that is the last thing the owner would like.
This season will be harder for the Cowboys as they traded their top receiver Amari Cooper to the Browns, cut tackle La’el Collins and guard Connor Williams along with Cedrick Wilson left to join the Dolphins. Despite this, the owner is confident with his team’s chances to win the title in 2022 because all he cares about is that they still have Ezekiel Elliott and a healthy Dak Prescott.
Dak has not had an entire offseason to prep since his injury and contract dispute in 2019 and 2020, last year he ended up rehabbing that ankle. Coming to Zeke, the RB is healthy and appears to be in the best shape of his life, “I’m really happy with Dak, just his work to get in top shape coming in, I like Zeke’s physical condition. Those are pluses. They are musts for us. I like the fact that (Tony) Pollard’s got an enhanced expectation. That’ll pay off for him and us,” Jones added stating that the duo has something special in the tank for the remainder of the NFL this season.
Dallas did not have the best free agency but they added James Washington in free agency, drafted wideout Jalen Tolbert in the third round, and they already have CeeDee Lamb who will not have to step up to the plate and excel as he is the No.1 option.
Jones has said that he feels Lamb is much better than Cooper, he further elaborated on this adding, “I really like our receiving corps, I know we’re missing (Amari) Cooper, but that’s going to get some more balls for somebody else out there. And I think that we’ve got a group of receivers that can enhance Dak’s passing and our execution, so all of that’s good.”
The final piece that will allow the Cowboys to perform better this year is an upgraded offensive line featuring first-rounder Tyler Smith and Terrence Steele. Jones concludes by stating, “We’ve got some players from last year that are going to be real contributors, and then we’ve got some new players this year, our draft picks principally, that will help us.”
