“Caught in 4K” – Bengals defender faces wrath on social media for embarrassing ‘fake injury’ dive to stop play vs Chiefs

Jessie Bates III orchestrated brilliant injury to get the Cincinnati Bengals some time to make their defensive subsitutions.

In the NFL, winning is everything, and at times you may have to do unusual and unexpected things in order to accomplish that objective. Fans saw something along similar lines in the Sunday Night Football matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Kansas City Chiefs when the safety for the former team pulled a Paul Pierce in order to help his team get an edge.

It was the second quarter of the game, and the Kansas City Chiefs were at the goal line and were preparing to line up. Amidst this, Jessie Bates III was seen falling to the ground in an unexpected fashion and held on to his leg as though he had sustained some sort of injury. This particular play was reviewed by officials.

It was a pretty smart play if you think of it. Jessie Bates had his head in the game and realized that the Bengals defensive substitutions were taking longer than expected to get back on the field. He had to do something about it so that his team did not end up getting a flag, a lost timeout, or even worse, having the opponents take advantage of this mix-up.

Following this play from Jessie Bates III, broadcasters Tony Romo and Jim Nantz of CBS iterated that the defensive player was not the best actor as his “injury” was not very convincing.

“Look at this, watch. They’re substituting and they’re late. ‘Bates, go down! Go down! Go down! Oh, I got a cramp. Oooh, that one really hurts. Ah, let me get off. Okay.’ That wasn’t fake at all,” Romo commented.

Fans were entertained by this play and here’s what they had to say:

As long as the referees don’t catch it, everything is good.

Bates timed it perfectly to get away with it.

That’s because football > soccer.

The safety from Cincinnati, jersey number 30, Jessie Bates III for his incredibly timed injury against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Probably not.

Terribly good.

Ring or no ring this season, Bates is definitely getting himself an Emmy.

That summarizes the play in one word.

Jessie Bates III’s play was unusual, but smartly timed. The Kansas City Chiefs did end up scoring three plays later after Jerick McKinnon scored a 2-yard touchdown run. However, the Cincinnati Bengals had the last laugh as they beat the Chiefs, improving their head-to-head record to 3-0.
