As the 2023 NFL season gets closer, the teams are feeling the pressure. Tempers escalated on Wednesday in Florham Park, New Jersey, during the joint practice session between the New York Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Although the two sides are at different ends of the spectrum, they can’t be separated regarding fighting spirit. So when defending the team’s pride, every player feels they need to jump in and fight.
From the footage, it’s unclear what transpired prior to the skirmish. The fight broke out near where most of the Buccaneers players had gathered. Then the Jets players slowly surrounded the Bucs as the fight raged on. Heated words and a few punches were exchanged. But it did not last for too long. Thankfully for both sides, the practice restarted after a small pause.
This was not an isolated incident, as a few days ago, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had a small fight during their practice. Elsewhere, the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Commanders players had similar moments as well.
It was not all doom and gloom for the Jets. Aaron Rodgers looked perfect in 7-on-7s despite getting sacked six times on the day. The Jets’ new quarterback completed 16 out of his 20 passes; among them was an accurate throw to wide receiver Garrett Wilson. However, his best pass was to longtime friend and veteran playmaker Randall Cobb during the 11-on-11 period.
A New York Jets coach was hospitalized
Besides the aforementioned skirmish, several other fights occurred during the New York Jets-Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ joint training camp. One of them did not end so well.
Tony Oden, who is a senior defensive assistant and cornerbacks coach for the Jets, reportedly ended up in the hospital. Head coach Robert Saleh later revealed that it was “friendly fire.”
The paramedics at the camp tended to Oden as the players surrounded him while taking a knee. Saleh later revealed that his colleague was okay.
“I’m not exactly sure what happened, [but] he’s doing fine,” he said, as per the New York Post. “I think he caught some friendly fire. He’s awake and stable.”
The New York Jets are Oden’s eighth NFL team. He joined them in 2021 after previously being part of the San Francisco 49ers alongside Robert Saleh as a cornerback coach. The 50-year-old had his first taste of Super Bowl glory in 2010 while working for the New Orleans Saints.
