“I gotta be a better leader,” Jets QB Zach Wilson makes BOLD claim after Robert Saleh’s ruthless decision to bench him

The writing was on the wall for Zach Wilson and his worst fears have come true. New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has taken the bold step of benching the young quarterback for the Week-12 clash against the Chicago Bears.
The 10-3 defeat against the Patriots last week, was more than just a normal defeat for the squad, especially the way their offense turned up for the fixture. Zach Wilson has a horror outing on the pitch, but that was the least of his troubles.
When asked about the fact if he failed his team’s defense, the quarterback bluntly denied any sort of accountability. This fuelled discontent among his teammates inside the locker room and those rumors turned out to be true courtesy of Robert Saleh’s big decision.
Zach Wilson showed a lot of maturity after being benched by the Jets
However, it seems that the 23-year-old has already had a big learning curve in his relatively young career. He came out with a positive attitude after the decision was announced by Saleh and has vouched to improve his leadership skills.
Zach Wilson acknowledged his mistake of not handling the situation correctly, especially after his defense had an outstanding performance and was the only source of light in an otherwise dull team performance.
“The way that I handled the situation wasn’t right,” Wilson said, via Connor Hughes of SNY. “I gotta be a better football player and then I gotta be a better leader for these guys. I have an opportunity to turn a page here as a player and as a leader.”
“It’s tough, man,” Wilson said. “It’s never fun. The first thing that kinda went to my mind is that I gotta get to work. I gotta get better and I’m gonna approach that every single day to keep working to get better. . . . I wouldn’t say necessarily surprised because I haven’t been doing my job. Of course, I would like to not agree with the decision but it comes down to I’ve gotta play better.”
Robert Saleh clarified that the decision to bench Zach Wilson does not effectively mean an end to his career with the franchise, but is simply a way to make him better for the upcoming games.
