Sauce Gardner was initially in shock as the New York Jets lost narrowly to the Kansas City Chiefs at MetLife Stadium. But the incidents leading up to the defeat left him searching for words to describe the game-changing penalty against him in the Chiefs drive.

The visiting team was leading by three points, with five minutes remaining on the clock. Stand in, running back Michael Carter II picked off a Patrick Mahomes pass, but a yellow flag from the referee negated the play. According to the officials, Gardner was holding Chiefs playmaker Marquez Valdes-Scantling when he tried to jump for the ball. It meant that the ball was still in the Chiefs’ possession. They ran down the clock to win the game 23-20.

“I ain’t even going to lie. It’s really frustrating,” Gardner told the media after the game. “The receiver ran into me; it was a collision. The same thing was happening all game, and they didn’t throw no flags.”

“Pat [Mahomes] threw the ball outside the receiver; MC [Michael Carter] was there; he made the play, and the referee threw the flag,” he continued. Then he described the moment with a basketball analogy, where similar scenarios happen all the time. In 1-on-1 situations, the defender usually stays on top of the intended pass target. In this case, the play was deemed to be a foul. “I can’t believe that. I don’t even know what to say,” Gardner ended the interview still in disbelief.

Sauce Gardner hasn’t had the best of starts to the 2023 season

The New York Jets were one of the Draft Kings’ favorites to go deep into the postseason. With the inclusion of Super Bowl winner Aaron Rodgers as the team’s primary quarterback, it looked like a certain possibility. But his untimely, season-ending injury changed the landscape of that plan.

Now third-year signal caller Zach Wilson is at the helm. Despite a noteworthy performance yesterday, the 24-year-old has struggled in previous games. However, he is not the only one who has had a down campaign. The Jets defense that ranked in the top 5 in the NFL last season seems swish-cheez at times.

Cornerback Sauce Gardner had a stellar 2022 with 75 tackles and 2 picks on the way to bagging the Rookie of the Season award. A year later, that form has mellowed down a little. Back-to-back losses take a toll on the team’s morale, and Gardner is no different. Even though that rarely comes up on his face, it has to be there, lingering in the back of his mind. Next, he will be facing fellow strugglers, the Denver Broncos.
