The New York Jets are leaving no stone unturned to provide Aaron Rodgers with the needed support for the coming season. In an attempt to do that, the Jets signed the former Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Tyron Smith to strengthen their attacking line. He is expected to provide much room to the veteran quarterback. The two parties have agreed on a one-year deal, as per Ian Rapoport.
This is the third signing by the Jets this offseason. Before that, the Jets signed John Simpson and Morgan Moses. Both are expected to have a significant impact on the gridiron. They released their backup quarterback, Zach Wilson, as well.
All these signings are aimed at the development of the Jets’ poor offensive performance last season. They allowed 64 sacks last season and ranked 28th. The team also suffered major injury concerns. Rodgers went through a major Achilles Tendon injury last season and missed all the games.
In this context, the signing of Tyron Smith is raising some hope. However, despite being one of the most efficient linemen, he poses a major injury concern. The lineman has missed 37 games in the last four seasons.
In addition, his age is also a reason to raise eyebrows. Smith is 33 and at that age, it is difficult to deal with major injuries. Moses is also 33 and they both will protect their quarterback who is a 40-year-old veteran. Surely this age issue might be a thought behind their minds somewhere.
Smith had an electrifying career in the Dallas Cowboys. The OT has an 89.1% pass-block win rate along with a 78.8% run-block win rate. In addition, the OT was selected Pro-Bowl eight times and All-Pro four times.
The Jets fans were overwhelmed by the new signings
The signing of Tyron Smith and others has made the Jets fans happy. Last season, they witnessed their offense succumbing at crucial moments. In addition, the fans were frustrated with the underperformers in the offense, last season.
The underwhelming performance of the Jets’ offense frustrated not only the fans but also Breece Hall, who plays as the running back position for the team. Despite the poor performance of the Jets team, the RB had a standalone performance with almost 1,000 rushing yards. His stats could have increased if he had great support from the offensive line.
Considering all these, the Jets fans celebrated the new signings on X. Check out some of the comments that they made.
It is to be seen whether the team manages to make sure a good offensive display with Aaron Rodgers and three new signings. All eyes are on Rodgers recovery and what more weapons the Jets GM add to their arsenal.
