The rumors have all come to fruition. Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, has left the NCAA and collegiate football to make a blockbuster return to the NFL. He has accepted the role of Head Coach with the Los Angeles Chargers after weeks of discussions and multiple meetings with the team’s ownership and management.

Jim Harbaugh led the Michigan Wolverines to a National Championship title. The Harbaugh-led Wolverines defeated Alabama and Washington to win the championship. His next mission is to make a return to the Super Bowl, and this time, to win one. Harbaugh has coached in the NFL before. He led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens in 2013. Famously, he coached against his brother, John Harbaugh, in the Super Bowl matchup. The latter had the last laugh as the Ravens reigned victorious.

Jim Harbaugh had a successful record in the NFL. He has won 44 games, lost 19, and tied one game. In his 4-seasons as an HC, he led his team to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons. His .695 winning percentage is fifth all-time amongst NFL Head Coaches.

The Chargers struggled this season under Brandon Staley. They were amongst the most disappointing teams in the NFL this season. After a disastrous 21-63 loss against the Raiders, the Chargers fired Staley. Immediately, Jim Harbaugh was among the favorites to take over the reign in LA. Now that Harbaugh has arrived, he could help Justin Herbert and the Chargers reach the next level.

Jim Harbaugh’s departure leaves the Michigan Wolverines without a HC

Jim Harbaugh has earned a reputation for one thing: over the years, the man became a master at turning the fate of ill-managed football programs around quickly. He did the same with the Wolverines and Stanford back in the day. His mission now will be to do the same with the Los Angeles Chargers, a team that has a young and talented quarterback in Justin Herbert, along with a good roster but one that lacks direction.

The Chargers ended their season with a horrid 5-12 record, landing at the bottom of the AFC West. The division has been cutthroat, and with the arrival of Harbaugh, it just got harder for the Raiders and Broncos.

The details of Jim Harbaugh’s contract with the Los Angeles Chargers remain under wraps. While the Michigan Wolverines did their best to retain Harbaugh by paying him handsomely and making him the highest-paid head coach in college football history, he has set his sights elsewhere. On the other hand, Michigan needs a new head coach to continue its efforts to retain the championship next year.

It was obvious that Harbaugh was interested in the NFL when he hired Don Yee as his agent earlier this year. Now that he is back in the NFL and with his brother John just one win short of making the Super Bowl yet again, will fans ever get to see a repeat of the HarBowl ever again? That is some food for thought.
