Jimmy Garoppolo was starting Super Bowl LIV at the center for the San Francisco 49ers. Now, two years later, he will be wearing the silver and black of the Las Vegas Raiders to start the 2023 NFL season. After going through a couple of rough years with the 49ers, he signed with the Raiders this offseason. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Garoppolo looked back on his time in the Bay and opened up about the ”Awkward” 2021 season after the Trey Lance draft.

”Yeah, the year before was real awkward,” Jimmy G said about the 2021 season. ”That was tougher than this past year, honestly. You’re always gonna be dealt a hard hand at some point, and you’ve just got to make the best of it, and that’s what I’ve tried to do.”

Garoppolo also talked about the decision of not having surgery on his injured foot during last year’s playoff run in hopes to be ready to play in the Super Bowl. “We tried to make the best of the situation. In case something did happen – like it did – I wanted to be ready just in case.”

The Raiders open their preseason campaign by hosting the 49ers at the Allegiant Stadium on the 13th of August. Although it is unlikely that the QB will start for the Raiders, he will hope that his new team comes out on top against his former team.

The San Francisco 49ers coach, Kyle Shanahan, is considered to be one of the best coaches in the NFL. The 49ers have been in contention to win the Super Bowl for the past three years, largely due to the creative playcalling of their signal caller. In a recent press conference, Shanahan praised his former quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, now with the Las Vegas Raiders, and said he was the ”best quarterback” in San Francisco since Steve Young.

”Jimmy was unbelievable here. I think he was the best quarterback here in about 20 years since Steve Young,’” Shanahan said. ”Every time he played and stayed healthy, we were either in the Super Bowl or NFC Championship Game.”

Shanahan has to sort out his starting QB before Week 1. Trey Lance is yet to have a breakout year as injuries have sidelined him for most of his professional career. Brock Purdy took the league by storm after replacing Garoppolo last year during the 49ers’ Week 13 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. With Garoppolo gone, the starting spot is up for grabs.
