Back in 2023 off-season, the 2-time Super Bowl Champion Jimmy Garoppolo had a rough exit from the San Francisco 49ers following an injury-riddled 2022 season. Although he left San Francisco as a free agent, a simple comment by the Niners’ head coach Kyle Shanahan still affected him towards the end of the last NFL season.
Following the 49ers’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game, Shanahan was asked if there’s any chance the Niners are considering bringing Jimmy Garoppolo back to their team. Shanahan replied with a blunt “No” that seemed insulting at that moment. Garoppolo, who is usually good at avoiding the outside noise let that comment affect him. “I mean, we’re all people,” Garoppolo said in a recent interview with The San Francisco Chronicle’s Michael Silver. “You hear it, things like that. I just try to make the best of the situation. We’ve all been through hard things. In life, things are gonna happen that don’t go your way, and you’ve just got to make the best of it.”
But the veteran leader Garoppolo didn’t let it bother for him a long time. The Las Vegas Raiders quarterback is ready to go and ball out in new colors in the upcoming season. “As the quarterback of a team, there are a lot of guys looking at you in that huddle. So, you really can’t show that side of it. You’ve just got to go out there and ball. That’s the part that’s the hardest. But it’s part of the job,” Garoppolo told Silver.
Kyle Shanahan compares Jimmy Garoppolo with Steve Young
Despite the rough split between the 49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo, head coach Kyle Shanahan gave the utmost respect to Garoppolo by comparing him with the Niners icon Steve Young. During a recent press conference, Shanahan called Garoppolo the best quarterback to play for the 49ers since Steve Young left the franchise. It may sound exaggerating but it’s fairly accurate.
When Garoppolo was fully healthy back in 2019 he led the 49ers all the way to the Super Bowl. They ended up losing the big game to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Still, it is a successful season for Jimmy G and the 49ers.
But now, after 6 years in red and gold, Garoppolo will wear black and silver in 2023 as he signed a new 3-year deal with the Raiders in the off-season. He is set to replace Derek Carr as the starting QB in Vegas.
