Jimmy Garoppolo took the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl LIV. Three years later, he is the Las Vegas Raiders‘ starting quarterback. Garoppolo’s time in San Francisco was filled with criticism and constant scrutiny. He knows a thing or two about ‘weird situations’ in San Francisco.

Trey Lance was drafted third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. He was expected to be the 49ers starting quarterback for years to come. A couple of years later, he is now the backup quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. There was a lot of criticism about the way the 49ers handled this situation. Lance only played eight games for the 49ers in his two years with the team. Garoppolo was asked about this situation in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated.

“Uh, you know, weird situation; there have been a lot of weird situations over there in San Francisco, just to leave it at that,” Garoppolo said. “But I’m happy Trey got another shot, man. Happy he’s getting to Dallas, gets another opportunity. Hopefully things work out there, but it’s a weird league. He was quite supportive of Lance and said, “I think Trey’s made of the right stuff. He’s a good dude; love that guy; he’s a brother to me, so I’m always pulling for him.”

Garoppolo also talked about the 49ers’ mishandling of quarterbacks. When the reporter suggested that the team’s approach could be called “messy”, Garoppolo agreed with an awkward smile and said, “That’s a nice way to put it.”

Garoppolo was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this offseason. He will be the Raiders’ starting quarterback in Week 1. The 49ers had a weird QB drama this offseason. Lance was named the starter last season, but after an injury to his foot, he was replaced by Brock Purdy, who took the team to the NFC Championship Game. Lance was demoted to the QB3 position after his poor preseason performances, and he was later traded to the Cowboys. Purdy was named the 49ers starter for this season.

Jimmy Garoppolo was happy to have Tom Brady in the locker room again

Tom Brady recently joined the ownership group of the Las Vegas Raiders. Jimmy Garoppolo will be the starting quarterback for the Raiders this season. Brady and Garoppolo spent three years together as teammates with the New England Patriots. Garoppolo was the backup quarterback to Brady, and they won two Super Bowls together.

In an interview with Yahoo Sports’ Jason Fitz, Garoppolo talked about having Brady in the locker room before their final preseason game. “Not weird. It was cool seeing him in the locker room.” Garoppolo told Fitz. “Dude loves ball; you could tell the competitor in him is coming out a little bit, even for just a preseason game. I mean, he’s telling us to go ruin their day. It was nice having him around, man. He’s good vibes, he’s good people.”

The Raiders traded for Garoppolo this offseason from the San Francisco 49ers. He replaces Derek Carr, who will play for the New Orleans Saints. The Raiders begin their season against the Denver Broncos in week 1 on September 10.
