Jimmy Garoppolo was always great at shutting out outside noise. But when that criticism comes from someone like Kyle Shanahan, he can’t just turn a blind eye.
The 31-year-old played five seasons under Shanahan, from 2017 to 2022, after he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers from the New England Patriots. Their partnership took the California franchise to back-to-back playoffs and a championship game. However, the two parted ways on a sour note as Jimmy G headed for Sin City.
As per the San Francisco Chronicle, Shanahan allegedly accused Garoppolo of skipping team meetings. Michael Silver of the Chronicle asked the former Easter, Illinois, signal caller whether he skipped team meetings or not. Garoppolo revealed he wasn’t required to attend since he was injured.
“Really? I never heard that,” he replied to Silver. “There were a lot of rumors when I was in the Bay about me. I wouldn’t believe everything you hear.”
Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly underwent surgery in March of this year for an injured foot that he picked up against the Miami Dolphins last year. Because of it, his season was cut short. Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy replaced him, as backup Trey Lance had a knock.
The San Francisco 49ers could have brought Garoppolo back during the playoffs, as Purdy got injured. Amidst the rumors of bringing back retired Philip Rivers, Shanahan almost had to play RB Christian McCaffrey at quarterback against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, they lost the game 7-31.
Jimmy Garoppolo and Kyle Shanahan come face-to-face during the 49ers’ joint practice with the Raiders
After the trade of eight-year starter Derek Carr in the offseason, the Las Vegas Raiders needed a replacement. They took advantage of the rising tension surrounding Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers and signed him as their No. 1.
The trade went smoothly as he reunited with his former offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels. The new Raiders head coach has won two Super Bowls with a young Garoppolo, so they know each other well.
The media was itching to see what would happen when the 49ers began their joint training camp with the Raiders. But for Garoppolo, it was a reunion with his brothers.
“Those are my brothers,” he said, as per ESPN‘s Paul Gutierrez. “I love those guys. We had a good time out there competing.”
He came into the Raiders facility with the injury, and there were rumors he may still be out for some time. Coach McDaniels revealed that he is relieved that his primary signal-caller is ready to go.
“There’s no shortcut to it,” Josh McDaniels said. “When it’s your seventh day since November of last year.” He emphasized that it’s not easy to come into a new system and adapt quickly; it takes time.
Jimmy Garoppolo has to pick up the pace if he wants to get one over his former employers. He faces the 49ers in a friendly match on Sunday.
