“Comeback wasn’t on my mind,” Jimmy Garoppolo SHOCKING revelation on trade saga despite signing new contract with the 49ers

“Comeback wasn’t on my mind,” Jimmy Garoppolo SHOCKING revelation on trade saga despite signing new contract with the 49ers

The league’s most talked-about backup quarterback, who was demoted by Trey Lance and was reportedly expected to play somewhere this season, has not been moved. The two parties got together on Monday to renegotiate Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract into a one-year agreement with a basic salary that is totally guaranteed to be $6.5 million because the 49ers haven’t found the proper fit and he hasn’t asked to be released.

Garoppolo is as shocked as you are when he addressed the media in the Bay Area for the first time since February 1. The 30-year-old was quite surprised after signing a new contract with the franchise despite everything claiming to be a move away from the 49ers only a few days ago.

“Coming back really wasn’t on my mind to be completely honest,” Garoppolo told reporters Thursday in Santa Clara, Calif, after a San Francisco 49ers practice. “I was training out here, I had to be here, so I was here for that reason. I was just trying to get my body right, get my shoulder right. I felt very confident out there.

Jimmy Garoppolo would not specify which franchises were involved, only that “there were a lot of conversations with other teams.” If not for a right shoulder surgery early in the offseason that Garoppolo sought to avoid but delayed realizing was necessary for three to four weeks, the 49ers could have found a trade partner.

Garoppolo started his shoulder is getting better every day since he started throwing again in late June, but it appears that teams were not eager to risk sending draft selections to the San Francisco 49ers for a chance on a divisive quarterback recovering from shoulder surgery.

The 49ers wouldn’t want an unhappy quarterback on the team after four and a half seasons as the undisputed starter, so Garoppolo might have complicated matters by pressing for his release to find a quarterback competition somewhere.

Another quarterback might still be injured, and Garoppolo could end up playing for a different club. Though he will now be holding the clipboard, he is back where he did not expect to be following an odd summer.
