Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones in happier times.
The Dallas Cowboys may be one of the most valuable teams in all of football, but they have not been a winning team in over a quarter of a century. The golden era of the Cowboys was when the team made it to back-to-back Super Bowls in 1992 and 93 respectively under legendary HC Jimmy Johnson.
Johnson recently came out with his memoir titled “Swagger: Super Bowls, Brass Balls, and Footballs.” The now-retired HC worked at the University of Miami before he coached America’s Team in 89, the year that Jerry Jones purchased the team and showed Tom Landry the door.
In his very first season, Jimmy Johnson had a terrible 1-15 record, but due to the team’s smart offseason moves, Dallas was a force to be reckoned with in 92 and 93. While the team may have been thriving, all was not well in the front office. Jimmy Johnson and owner Jerry Jones, who shared a close bond, seemed to have grown apart. This rift ended with the departure of Johnson as the HC before the 94′ season.

Jimmy Johnson admits he has a complicated relationship with Jerry Jones:
![Jerry Jones has been reluctant to induct Jimmy Johnson into the Cowboys' ring of honor for years due to reasons that remain unknown.](https://media.firstsportz.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/16232907/Adobe_Express_20221116_2302260_1-1024x576.jpg)
Jimmy Johnson, in his appearance on Fox and Friends had this to say regarding his relationship with Jerry Jones. “I said in the book, I start off the chapter on Jerry, I said, ‘people don’t really understand our relationship for the simple reason-I don’t understand our relationship.’ When we were together, everything was 100%, we were happy, we’e hugging each other, one thing or another. But there was a conflict and there was tension toward the end of my career with Dallas,” the legendary coach admitted to host Steve Doocy.
Recalling the first time that he met Jerry Jones, Johnson remembers that day like it was a recent memory. “When Jerry was buying the Cowboys…we were in his automobile and he said ‘Jimmy, you’re in charge of the football, I’m in charge of he money and we’ll make sports history.’ Well, we made sports history and everything worked fine for a long time then all of a sudden, we started winning and then when we started winning, things changed a little bit. There started to be a little bit of tension.”
Jones has often been accused of poking his nose into the handling of team matters. However, Jimmy Johnson strongly disagreed with that assessment. “People say ‘he meddled too much.’ No, he didn’t meddle. It’s just that when we started winning, he wanted to be more in the spotlight. I was proud of what we accomplished. Maybe I didn’t want to share it. I take a lot of fault in it. I should’ve shared it more.”
Jimmy Johnson’s memoir gives a detailed account of the coach’s entire life. It focuses on the highs and lows of his career and even has excerpts where he regretted not being a family-oriented man due to the nature of his job.
