Joe Burrow has achieved more in his three years as the quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals than all his predecessors combined. His rookie season was cut short due to an injury, but he bounced back harder and led the Bengals to their first playoff win since 1990 and took them to their third Super Bowl in 2022.
Now, Burrow is just one victory away from taking Cincinnati to their second straight Super Bowl. He has to defeat Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game, which he did last year as well.
The former first-overall pick is 3-0 against Kansas City with a 72.2 completion percentage, 327.3 passing yards per game, and an 8-1 touchdown to interception ratio. So, naturally everyone is expecting the Bengals to win the Lamar Hunt Trophy on Sunday and that’s what Burrow said at Friday’s conference.
Joe Burrow talks about players, coaches, and injuries
During the press conference, Joe Burrow was asked whether he felt surreal about leading the Bengals to this point twice in his very short career. “I wouldn’t say it’s surreal. I would say winning is expected,” the star quarterback said. “I think if you would’ve told people that we were going to be in this spot a couple of years ago, I think people would say we were crazy, but we trusted the process, trusted the organization and the front office, and put together a great team and great people and got us to this point.”
Joe Burrow also gave credit to the coaching staff, including head coach Zac Taylor for sharpening his skillsets. Bengals’ owner and GM Mike Brown has done a great job at signing rookies and elite free agents who have made an impact on the team during important games. “I’m impressed with how their rookies have been playing. You can tell they’ve improved a lot throughout the season,” Burrow said.
The former LSU quarterback has been consistent the entire season. He threw for 4475 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Despite not having his three O-line starters during the divisional playoffs game against Buffalo Bills, Burrow held his own and led the Bengals to an easy victory. During last year’s AFC Championship game, he was really efficient on his feet and was able to break free tackles twice in the game.
There will be a lot of pressure on Joe Burrow to win the game at Arrowhead or, as the Bengals’ have dubbed it ‘Burrowhead’. The Bengals’ offensive tackle Jonah Williams and Guard Alex Cappa were out of practice due to injuries. Patrick Mahomes won’t be his 100 percent because of the ankle injury he suffered and star tight end Travis Kelce is questionable to play due to a back injury. Let’s see which of these two great quarterbacks plays slightly better than the other one and takes their team to the Super Bowl in Arizona.
