After months of speculation, the NFL sees another record being broken as the Bengals make Joe Burrow the highest-paid player of all time. Burrow signed a massive $275,000,000 deal with the Bengals for 5 years which would fetch him up to $55 million per year. The football season has finally arrived.
By all means, the 26-year-old deserves all the credit he gets for becoming one of the AFC bottom feeders and serious title contenders. Before his draft in 2020, the Bengals had a negative record in the league, and his first season was no different. He turned things around in the second year, winning the AFC division back-to-back and making their first Super Bowl (2021) appearance since 1989.
Burrow’s outstanding performance has established him as one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and he was expected to continue the trajectory. However, he was still under his rookie contract and was due a new one worthy of his performance. But it was all thrown into contention when he was carted off early in the preseason because of a calf strain.
Despite head coach Zac Taylor staying tight-lipped and denying reports that Burrow’s injury was the reason for the delay in the new deal, it was inevitable that the Pro Bowler would get one very soon, as per Athletic‘s Dianna Russini.
Just one day later, the Cincinnati Bengals decided to give Joe Burrow a five-year, $275 million extension that includes $219.01 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history. ESPN‘s Adam Schefter tweeted just after NFL prime time kicked off.

Joe Burrow resets the quarterback market
Since the inception of football, the quarterback has been the single most valuable position in the game. Most of the time, great quarterbacks are game-changers with their big IQ plays and arrow-like throws. That’s the reason they get paid handsomely.
The 2023 offseason has seen some jaw-dropping scenes when it comes to extending a quarterback’s contract. Everything kicked off with the Eagles agreeing to a five-year, $255 million deal with Jalen Hurts in April. Then, just a few days later, Lamar Jackson signed a $260 million contract for five years. The saga continued with the Chargers announcing a new deal for Justin Herbert worth $262 million. Now the Bengals have made Joe Burrow the highest-earning player in the history of the NFL.
However, that could also be topped if Patrick Mahomes decides to sign a new deal with the Chiefs. The multiple-time Super Bowl winner signed a 10-year, $450,000,000 contract that allows him to earn $45 million annually. Besides, there’s Dak Prescott, whose contract will run out with the Cowboys after this season.
