Joe Burrow is allegedly looking to follow Deshaun Watson’s path to bag a fully secured contract, claims NFL insider

With just a couple of days left for the 2023 season opener, some prominent players are yet to sign their contract extensions. Star players including Chris Jones, Brian Burns, and Jonathan Taylor‘s future with their franchises are in question. But one most notable contract, that is still pending is the extension of the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.
Amidst this situation, renowned NFL insider Andrew Brandt speculates that the deal in Burrow’s new deal could be due to the QB expecting a fully guaranteed contract similar to the one the Cleveland Browns gave Deshaun Watson back in 2022.
“Maybe Burrow, in his quiet way, is digging in on the Deshaun Watson precedent of a fully secured contract, a precedent that has become more of an aberration with subsequent quarterback contract negotiations,” wrote Brandt in his Sports Illustrated article.
It should be noted that it was just speculation and not insider information. Nonetheless, he also speculated that the delay could be because of Burrow’s possible desire to sign a short team instead of a long-term one. By doing so, Burrow would be able to get another bite in the free agency when he’s still young.
Joe Burrow was expected to sign a huge deal in the 2023 off-season but he hasn’t signed any extension yet. The 2023 off-season saw some of the biggest quarterbacks in the league signing huge 5-year deals.
The Browns QB Deshaun Watson’s 2022 contract changed the market for the quarterbacks. Many QBs including Lamar Jackson were fighting for a fully guaranteed deal after Watson’s deal but so far none other than the Browns QB has been able to secure a fully guaranteed contract.
Joe Burrow is expected to play in week 1
The Cincinnati Bengals avoided a massive scare as their star quarterback Joe Burrow has recovered from the injury he suffered during the training camp back in July.
Burrow suffered a calf injury during camp and had to be carted off the field. As expected, he missed several weeks of training camp. He was also expected to miss the first few weeks of the 2023 regular season.
However, just a couple of days ago, the Pro Bowl QB again started training with his teammates. That is good news for the Cincinnati-based football team and their fans.
Now, Burrow is expected to lead his team in their 2023 season opener against their AFC North division rivals Cleveland Browns. Burrow and the Bengals would look to start the season with a victory against Deshaun Watson and the Browns.
