Bengals QB Joe Burrow will get nearly a $500,000,000 Patrick Mahomes-like long-term contract, claims NFL Insider
Jeff Darlington believes that the Cincinnati Bengals could end up offering QB Joe Burrow a $500 million extension similar to that of Patrick Mahomes.
Joe Burrow
The NFL offseason has been nothing short of wild in recent history. It appears as though every other day, the league record for the highest-paid contract is changing. Patrick Mahomes made history in 2020 when the Kansas City Chiefs shattered the ceiling on how much a QB can be paid by locking him in for a decade in exchange for nearly $503 million. This contract was mind-boggling, as no other player in league history had a contract remotely close to this number.
The Baltimore Ravens are the most recent team to have bet big on their quarterback by offering him a massive deal. Lamar Jackson and the team signed a 5-year deal worth $260 million this offseason, putting an end to nearly a year of negotiations between both sides. There has never been a better time to be a quarterback in the NFL than right now, as the contracts are big enough to set them up for life.
Jalen Hurts, the QB for the Philadelphia Eagles, has also had a great off-season so far as he too signed a five-year deal worth $255 million with nearly $110 million of it guaranteed. With contracts this big floating across the league, one cannot help but wonder how this will impact the upcoming QB contracts. Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals is next up for an extension as his rookie deal will end in 2024. Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers will also be looking for a big payday when his contract comes to an end in 2024.
ESPN’s Jeff Darlington has an interesting take with respect to Joe Burrow’s upcoming extension. He stated this on The Rich Eisen Show, “The thing that’s most interesting for me here is….the structure of Burrow’s deal. Herbert, I think we could find out tomorrow it’s the same as Jalen Hurts’ deal and typical framework.” The analyst indicates that the Bengals and Joe Burrow have already had a conversation regarding his contract and what his expectations are from it.

Jeff Darlington believes the Cincinnati Bengals will lock Joe Burrow in for a long-time
Jeff further states, “Burrow made the comments that ‘I have made clear to the organization the structure of the contract that I want and I think it would be best for the team and myself moving forward,’ to me that says…I’m guessing here, I just think the tone of that, I’m curious to see if it winds up being more like a Patrick Mahomes deal, you know the 10-year half-a-bil situation where they can adjust each year. I feel like Burrow is the guy other than Mahomes that would do that,” and concludes.
In the most recent rankings of top quarterbacks in the NFL by league executives, coaches, scouts, and players, Joe Burrow came in second behind Patrick Mahomes. It is not hard to fathom Burrow getting a similar extension as he has been the biggest reason for the rise of the Bengals franchise in recent years. Granted, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins deserve their flowers, but without Burrow, that team does not fare as well as it has in the past seasons.
Look at it from Burrow’s perspective as well. He would not want to leave the Bengals, he is inclined to turn the franchise into a dynasty and Ja’Marr Chase was his teammate at LSU with whom he shares great on-field chemistry. The Bengals made the Super Bowl in 2022 but were unable to cap the season off successfully, but the mere fact that they went that far with a squad that was still relatively inexperienced says a lot about the talent and potential on that roster.
All-in-all neither Burrow nor the Bengals front office can even fathom trading their QB. Since he has proven himself, it is not really that far-fetched to expect him to get a long-term deal similar to that of Patrick Mahomes.
